I have Virgin Media 20Mb with my XL package and just tested mine on Speedtest.net. Results were;
Download 19.42 Mb/s.
Upload      1.86  Mb/s.
Ping            56ms
Server was at Gloucester 100 miles away.
Funily enough tested again with a nearer server at Milton Keynes which is only 20 miles away and although ping was 45ms and upload 1.95 Mb/s, download was only 18.2 Mb/s. I have no probs with 20Mb at the moment and i`m quite satisfied with what i`ve got.  :y

Judging by those figures, when you switch to 50Mb, you'll have one of the best domestic internet connections in the UK!  :y

You wont notice a difference though  :P  ;)

If I were you, I'd be on the phone to Sky asking why your connection is piss poor!

That's also considering that Sky PROMISE to never throttle their connections!

Of course, you could have a problem in your home telephone wiring..... how far is the Router from the Master Socket?  Who wired it?

As mentioned above, depends what you do. Standard browsing? nope...

But if your downloading OS updates, downloading loads of torrents, streaming music, and playing games online all at the same time, yes you do notice it  ;)

My connection is not so bad:

Better than I expected TBH. I live in the sticks and BT have no intentions of upgrading the exchange >:( >:(

I think it's still only going to be 5Mb upstream - in fact I suspect the upstream was upgraded purely to support 100Mb down, because you need at least enough upstream bandwidth to support ACK packets being sent out fast enough to maintain your downstream connection speed (otherwise the connection will throttle back - at least TCP will, UDP doesn't care).. and now 50% of your eyes have glazed over.. moving swiftly on!  ;D (Guess what I used to do for a living..  ;D)

Depends what you're doing..

In terms of browsing the net?
Nope, you probably won't notice any difference.

Downloading files? Half the time you're speed-limited by the source server anyway so .. that depends what and how you're downloading.

Funny you say that, I feel web sites have become slower to load over the years as speeds have increased.

When I first dot 512mb ADSL I cant remember the PC specs but maybe Pentuim 2 which meant 450 mhz at best with 15/32 Graphics and web pages loaded in the blink of an eye.  Now I have quad/dual core PC's with 4GB ram and 1GB HDMI Graphics and most pages seem to take thier time loading.

Shame Video on Demand and other Downloading cant be run independentky to good old simple browsing.

Router is on an extension so i don't suppose that will help(12ft), does the laptop need to be hardwired to the modem thing when running a speedteset or is it ok to do it wirelessly.

As you guessed i know F all about computers :-[ :-[

"2 Meg" 3G service. Upload is crucial for me as Skype is rubbish with it being so poor.

Sometimes the ping is as high as 700 !!!

I can only dream of "50 Meg". You lucky blighters.

How does Spain rate in this world list of Internet quality then?. It must be down there near the bottom surely? ;D ;D
