Depends what you're doing..

In terms of browsing the net? Nope, you probably won't notice any difference.

Downloading files? Half the time you're speed-limited by the source server anyway so .. that depends what and how you're downloading.

I always get confused why the average/advanced home user pays a lot of money for an Uber fast Internet connection.

Even for streaming HD movies, a 20Mb/s connection is overkill.

Even massive corporations who use t'interweb to back up Gigabytes of data every hour/evening cant make use of a silly download speed.

What this country needs is a massive increase of Upload speed!  That will make the Internet a proper network!

Just as an example, Romania has an AVERAGE upload speed 10x faster than the AVERAGE UK upload speed.

Their average download speed is less than 2.5x the average UK download speed.

I haven't chosen Romania as a comparison just because they are an exception, this is true for the majority of the world.

Yep, 50Mbit now comes with 5Mbit upstream (although most speedtests tend to top out at about 3.8Mbit, it's hard to know if that's Virgin or the speedtest host). Though they monitor and rate shape/cap the upstream quite heavily and overuse will lead to your downstream being nobbled hard.

In all honesty, Fibre Optic is generally 'What you see is what you get', but I'll chew off my own left bollock if you get anywhere near 5Mb/s after 3 months of service!

Such a technologically advanced country the UK is, yet we reign 64th in the Internet Connection list.  Premiership we are not!

I forget when they upgraded the upstream - must be at least two or three months ago now;

Anyway, upstream is really not an issue for probably 90% of users - then again, neither is 50Mbit downstream. How many people do you know who upload more than a few emails? (And no, torrents don't count)

I get upto 8Mb connection free as part of the telephone package (I make a lot of international calls, so TalkTalk are the only company I will go with)
Not too bad seeing as I'm a million miles from the exchange.  They are running my connection on what I told them to and not what they 'thought' was best though.

A few years ago, I'd very much agree with you, but the Upstream Speed is now as important as Downstream Speed.

Take your Games Console as one example.
Video 'conferencing' to your relatives in the USA or Aus as another.

I am exceptionally pleased that Virgin have taken the first step to a 'decent' connection.  BT are supposedly spending billions on converting all copper to Fibre Optic in the next decade.  A step which has taken far too long to implement.

It's a real boggle when far poorer, less technologically developed countries can trounce on our 'technological brilliance'.
