Smartphone question
« on: 15 February 2011, 10:13:35 »

I am due an upgrade at the end of the month and I and interested in getting a decent smartphone.  I have the E71 at the moment which is ok, but not brilliant.

I do not want any crApple products.

Although I am very tempted by the Galaxy Tab, I fear it would be too big for everyday usage.  Plus I think it is just too big for my coat pocket.  I have the usual requirements of web browsing, email, games and music etc but I also have a specific requirement of using it for sailing navigation aid.  You can get quite cheap e-chart like software for smartphones now and as I have a small boat on which a full chartplotter would be rediculous this is a perfect solution.

So I have whittled it down to 2 phones, Galaxy Wave and the HTC Desire HD.  Both similar contracts and price.  I would almost lean toward the HTC for the bigger screen which is HD thus affording better clarity on the marine charts but I am wondering if it is any good to use generally.

Whichever you choose you cannot make an error.
Personally I would choose a HTC.
Not sure about Galaxy but samsung phones always had one problem and that was legibility of the screen under direct sunlight.
Both are great phones, both are pretty big also.
Screen size and resolution can make a big difference if used as navigation software.
I have an old htc diamond which is used only as a gps and is way better than my friends dedicated garmin gps device.

Sorry mate but go to a shop, cover the Apple logo on the iPhone 4 and compare it to the other crap available. After the iPhone all other phones feel cheap, hard to use and boring.

Personally I think they are fantastic phones and provided you dont mind buying your music, vids apps etc etc through Apple (I dont mind!!) there really is no other choice.

Never got the whole "I hate Apple" thing that alot of people have.

Its a great product, a real quality experience and in many ways far far ahead of the opposition.

You could always buy an older device running windows mobile (crap to use but can be manipulated relatively easily.)

No, fixed to an Android due to the sailing software.  It wont/cant run on Windows Mobile because it's cr@p not suitable
