The Uk energy regulator is debating referring the whole energy industry to I think the competition committee.

It would be a good thing in my mind.

I had to laugh when the Centrica boss said it had "secured gas supplies for the next three years" Then what happens!!!!!! ;D ;D

I would guess he retires on a fat pension so he's all right, Jack. >:(

Does anybody in industry or government think (let alone invest) any longer term than that these days? ::)

It does seem a very short time, but now our energy is so globalised with so much uncertainty about the security of supply, there is going to be a great difficulty in predicting, let alone obtaining, the best price.

Long gone the days when we had town gas, and hundreds of coal pits to feed them, and the power stations! ::) ::) ::)

Progress they called it at the time :D :D :D ;)

I think we need to look at coal mining again and soon, before we lose all the expertise that still exists to do the job.... :)

I think we need to be looking at greater self sufficiency in the future...... :) :)

Just my own thoughts and comments, no need for anyone who disagrees to respond aggressively.... :-X

Yep, I think you are right, Vamps. :y :y

Our future energy needs lie in coal, shale gas & nuclear, plus oil as available.

If all the money being spent on useless windmills and solar panels was used instead to assist the development of new usable energy, we would be much better off.  :y :y

why on earth are utilities electric gas and water in private hands?
investment in the infastructure and investment in new (useful) development is second to profit.

years back when it was cheap, no one cared. my monthly direct debit for gas/electric has now jumped up by 25% .its too late to do anything.

rock and a hard place. :(

What a good question! I suspect the supporters of privatised core national industries will trot out  "they are more efficient". Of course that is debatable as they have to pay shareholders a dividend  and thus have to charge the customers more than a state run company.

A better question to ask would be Why are so many of the utilities owned in part or fully by foreign companies.? interestingly when utility prices are put up in countries like Spain the government have to OK them first. That keeps a check. In Britain we just have that mythical beast "free competition".  Funny how they all charge much the same ;D ;D Isn't it ironical that we subsidise German and French customers!

No matter how much I like the idea of renewable energy - particularly from the sea which seems to operate all the time, I keep coming back to we have got to get nuclear power stations and quick. What a relief that the Saudis didn't come up with the funding when we asked them to!
