Space Shuttle names
« on: 25 February 2011, 08:09:39 »

Of the 5 space shuttles who have launched, 4 are named after British vessels. (Challenger, Columbia, Discovery and Endeavour)

The Atlantis is named after a US research ship.

The Enterprise was never used after testing and the name was taken from Star Trek, it was originally to be named Constitution. The USS Enterprise is, coincidentally, a Constitution class vessel  :o

yes, too much time on my hands this morning  :y

Yes, unfortunately the USA also has financial woes and must be considering if they can really afford the trillons of dollars it is going to take for the next manned leap into space ;)

Just like supersonic passenger travel, it will be consigned to the list of "things we used to routinely do, but can't any more".  :'(

The people with the skills will dissipate, the ground on which they worked will get ploughed up and turned into another empty business park and that'll be the end of it.

This is the last shuttle I understand. It maybe that the US and Russia will have to piggy back whatever the Chinese come up with. Maybe this era is like Concordes era. Long period of consolidation while they come up with efficient, rapid long distance travel.

they could always just do pretend missions in a simulator in a car park for a fraction of the price. :y
