Oil price..an opportunity
« on: 02 March 2011, 19:11:33 »

I have two petrol stations within a five minute drive, asda and an independent. The price of both petrol and diesel has always been within a couple of pence at both. Since the price of oil  has rocketed (say the last month) the independent has put his prices up by 5p. Asda has kept it the same. The forecourt is virtually empty and he tells me, if it carries on, he will have to close.
Every cloud has a silver lining.....for someone.

Yep, the big guys can hold out that little bit longer, then, when they have no competition left, you'll be screwed. ;)

Thankfully they still have it right in Spain with the price of fuel being pretty much the same everywhere. Two supermarket chains have started the 5 cents a litre off if you spend 50 euros or more milarky. Thin end of the wedge.

My nearest station is 5 miles away and the next after that is 25 miles. Nearest offer supermarket 40 miles! It would be grim for our rural community if the local guy closed.

It would be grim, I agree. But rural garages in England are no more than thieves. They know they've got you by the bowlocks so they charge what they like. Supply and demand of course, but providing a community service they are not.

Yes Mo, I find it difficult to be sympathetic tbh, it's supposed to be about competition, currently the competition seems to be who can fix the price highest, price fixing being illegal surely?

Rural garages arent necassarily greedy, they cant buy fuel at the prices supermarkets buy it at, so they cant sell it as cheap.
Our local garage closed several years ago (and it used to sell LPG), I know the owner quite well and he told me that Asda were selling petrol cheaper at the pumps than he could buy it wholesale. ;)
