Newscorp victory: This is very very bad
« on: 03 March 2011, 08:51:25 »

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12631875

i blame that old fool Vince Cable if he could have kept schtum he would have still been in position to stop this atrocity, as it is the decision was made by that murdoch lap-dog Jeremy Hunt (with a "c") :(

I only hope the public outcry is massive and this weak coalition buckle, although its unlikely as the entire Newscorp organisation will doubtless show full support to Cameron, Osborne, etc

ah well - we seem to walk blindly through life letting foreign nationals take us over piece by piece, we should put Britain on ebay  ;D

It always used to be owned by him anyway, until he had a big row with his daughter. So he is just buying back what he setup...

Personally I think its a great idea, wonder if I can apply for a transfer to Sky Australia  ::)  ;D

it means that one unelected voice controls the majority of media in a free democratic country - i dont care whether hes left wing, right wing, believes in fairies at the bottom of the garden or is a religious nut - no one should wield that kind of power outside a dictatorship  :(

this is a guy who will happily bug your phone, influence elections and squeeze elected politicians with threat of negative coverage in his ever growing empire  :o

Doesn't the BBC have a far bigger reach than Sky?  About double If I recall right.

As for Murdoch being unelected - what has that got to do with anything?  Can you vote for who runs the Guardian, BBC Telegraph, Mirror or Sunday Sport?

I've some sympathy with that analysis BJ. :y

The Murdoch outfit has always been worthy of examination in my view as the bottom line and market domination seems to the governing factors in all aspects of their business plan.

Whether these elements can ever coexist happily with the need to provide an independent readily accessible news source (in this case) has yet to be assessed.

Agreed BJ.This dangerous man has far too much power already. Government ministers and even the PM drop to their knees in  submission when he speaks.

The writer/dramatist Dennis Potter who died of cancer in 1994 named his malignant tumour "Rupert". Highly appropriate I think... :(

despite what the Murdoch press and media would have you believe the BBC was, is and always will be impartial - and as far as I'm aware own no national newspapers - seems you're proving my point about why monopolies are a bad idea if Murdoch can set the agenda - his war on the beeb a case in point  :o

all newspapers are owned by someone, but when one man owns the majority any liberal, free thinking democrat should be profoundly worried - he's hoping we're all idiots who'll be spoonfed his views without even being aware of it.  :o

oh and hes graciously said he'll give up Sky News....but, errr fund it for 10 years...so...no conflict there then - honestly we're so dumb sometimes it beggars belief  :(

I didn't say anything about the BBC and impartiality, and I don't read any of the Murdoch titles.  What has that got to do with anything, and why do you suddenly go off on one about me proving some point about some war on the beeb?

I was trying to gain a better idea of exactly why you think this is so bad in terms of plurality.  Excuse me for being so bloody awkward in having the temerity to do so.

you right about one thing though Banjax - after what that moron Cable did, they couldnt really so no to Rupert - he would have had a field day with them.
He may well shut down or sell off Sky news to quieten the protests. If Bliar or Brown were still in office he would have got exactly what he wanted with little fuss, and Cambell would have had a virtual news embargo on the matter. The only place it would have made headlines would have been in " the ludicrous and hysterical" Daily Mail. ;)
