Friday specials
« on: 03 March 2011, 22:14:04 »

Looks like they have just been banned ?
Imo this shouldnt happen.Andyc provides a regular service for OOFers supplying genuine parts as cheap as he can do them for us. His Friday specials may not quite fit with the letter of the rules, Im not sure tbh, but its not someone trying to make as much money as they can from flogging their old bits and bobs. It is to me an extension of the service already being provided to us, by giving us good deals on tools to help us look after and maintain our cars.
Helping each other maintain our Omegas is after all the primary purpose of the forum.
I think the admins should reserve the right to use their judgment and common sense on such matters, rather than applying the rules the enth degree on every occassion.
Anyone else got any thoughts on this ? :-/

I'd rather not comment on the issue in question, but on the subject of AndyC he has been incredibly helpful in sourcing a new cambelt kit, water pump, aux belt and aux pulley for my 3.2 MV6.

Fantastic communication, and prices better than trade club delivered to my door.

His service to the forum is definitely invaluable.

That said - no desire to comment on the issue of what should/shouldn't be posted...  :y

I locked/edited the thread.

I hear and understand what you say as regards the tools and how they are of use to Omega owners.

The point is, if you allow sale of tools where does the line get drawn thereafter?

The sales section is for Omega's or Omega parts.

Yes, some sell headunits or the ability to decode radios - not just on Omega.  Yes, some sell oil that can get used in many cars, not just Omega.

The grief the sales section causes is not insignificant and moreso from the admin viewpoint.  Its trying to keep some form of control on the thing, rather than simply shutting the section down, TBH.

To clarify, it was edited/locked as the thread was for assorted tools, engine stands, compressors etc etc and not Omega specific parts.

There is absolutely no problem with the 'Friday Specials' being deals on Omega parts.  Its what the section is for.  I know that the poster has helped many an OOFer find Omega parts at good prices as well as harder to find 'no longer stocked' items.

The fact that he is also a dealer in Sealy items as well as Vauxhall?  Not knocking the seller by any means so please do not misunderstand the intentions.  :y

Hmmm, personally would appreciate some of the deals offered if a way could be found, and would like to support Andyc where possible, he is most deffiately one of the good guys in the trade, knows his stuff, helpfull in a pro active manner often when all else has failed, i realise thats not in question but it would be nice if we could reciprocate? We need him.

However, whatever happens admin have to manage it best they can, not us rabble  ::) ;D

I have not come across these offers on other forums and some of the stuff is at a cracking price from a known good guy, would hate to bite the nose to spite the face so to speak. Just my humble opinion and can't see the difference between this and the recent head unit offers :-/

For what its worth  here is my take on the situation.

Andy C  offers a great service to the forum and I cant see why he shouldnt be allowed ro continue with his friday specials as this could be one of the factors that memebers get cheaper parts  from him as his boss is being told that he is allowed to run these offers on here.

I can also see where  H21 is coming from too. What about running a pole  to see what others want and dont want  to do with these offers .

On a daily basis, my PM box fills up with requests from members (usually below the 250 post limit, but not always) asking to sell their wares - Omegas, parts, Fiat Pandas, Ford Escort headlights, CRT TVs, mobile phones, general garage clearance stuff etc - you get the picture.

When I say no, I invariably get a load of abuse back about 'jobs for the boys', 'cliquey' and fairness in general, normally backed up by links to past threads where we have allowed (or overlooked/missed) something that doesn't follow the strict letter of the rule. And to be completely selfishly blunt, I'm oppsing sick of it. I don't come on here to put up with that abuse.

The current solution is to enforce the guidelines 100%. Nothing is open for debate/discussion. It either 100% complies, or its removed. End of. No discussion. Enforced 100% by every member of the Admin Team.

Sadly, because of the minority of arseholes, it does ruin it for the majority.

We have a proposed solution, probably ready for implementation in April/May, but I can guarantee that will be a bumpy ride as well as some people will not comply, and will feel left out. Myself included.

I have spoken to AndyC, even met him, and believe him to be one of the 'Good Guys', and would happily recommend him to anyone needing parts (and Sealey tools).  His/Drive BsE's integrity is not the issue here.

I can see and understand both sides as well.  But at the end of the day it to be a straight choice.  The rules are Omega cars or parts and if Admin deviate from the rules then the arguement for posting gets blown wide open.

Last year I posyed details of a 2 month old double bike trailer for sale, It was offered at half price because they were moving and could not afford the expence to take it to the I.O.M.  I offered it because the are a lot of bikers here, the ad was nukes (from the test section within the hour) but I could have protested and saud it could be towed by an Omega, or even better, offered an Omega towbar for £300 with a free 2 way bike trailer.   ::)

It simply isn't possible to please everyone, and we cannot cater for everyone anyway. Thats not what OOF is about.

However, do not underestimate the number of people out there who think its their God given right to advertise their stuff for free at our expense, and when we refuse them (as its non compliant to our guidelines), become abusive, and in some cases try to cause us technical issues and/or bring the site down.

I'm sure I've publically stated that I want to see the Sale sections closed down, as the overhead simply isn't worth the (potential) gain. Fortunately for those wishing for it to remain open, the (slim?) majority of the Admin Team disagree.

Now I know its difficult for people who don't see what happens behind the scenes, but if anyone has any ideas about this, feel free to post them here.  We have our own ideas, but it won't suit everyone, and people will cry unfairness, trying to twist guidelines/history to suit their needs.

And for the record, I personally back Hotel21's actions. He applied the agreed rules fairly and correctly, as always.  If we think the rules are wrong, thats not Hotel21's fault.

Additionally for the record, as previously stated, this is in no way a comment about AndyC.

Maybe a bit of Jeromy Clarckson democracy. Ie its not a democracy, decision made, deal with it!... sort of thing? Rules are rules and automaticly there comes an exception, as long as the greater good is behind it all. Whatever that means for those involved so be it.

 Another recruitment drive perhaps?

Anyway, understandable, and a shame.

If only.

You don't get to see the shite, fortunately, which would be even more overwhelming if we had exceptions for Member ABC but not Member XYZ.

It's a great shame that the Friday Specials have to be pulled but I can understand why...

The rules have to be applied 100% of the time otherwise there'd be no rules.... If there were no rules where would we be? :-X :-X :-X

its a real dilemma for the admins, there is no doubt AndyC offers a great service, but as h21 says, where to draw the line? What if other members are allowed to do that, and people pay for services/goods which don't turn up?

There has to be one rule for all
