Couldn't help myself
« on: 25 May 2007, 18:25:27 »

I know it is not Omega stuff, but I will be doing the LPG Omega on Sunday.

No, today I tackled the Corsa. This is a two part conversion. Firstly, getting rid of the damned annoying paddles for the mirrors and replacing with electric ones. Then the aircon installation.

So, Mirrors first. Started with Drivers door. Off with door card and ripped out the old loom. Installed replacement loom, mirror switch, electric mirror and new trim. Job done in 30 minutes. Then the passenger side. Bit more tricky. The loom change was easy. The mirror had two problems. Firstly, the back was broken which I didn't know about. Also, the mirror glass had been replaced with one slightly too big over the original, so the movement was restricted which caused the mirror to pop off from one of the 3 ball joints. Out came my new dremmel and a bit of crafty cutting of the old back and similar on the new one meant an invisble repair was quickly achieved, well invisible to Stevie Wonder anyway. The glass was more difficult because once you remove the mirror glass, you cannot push it back on to the two adjusting ball joints as they crunch back into the worm drive motors. So a bit of invention was needed and some chemical platrsic used instead of the original screws which could not be refitted once I did get the mirror glass back in.

Now, the fun part. AIR CONDITIONINF install.

As I am taking it easy I restricted todays efforts to removing the grille, which cannot be removed because it is part of the sodding bumper DUH! Then removed the front crossmember/slam panel. This gives great access to the radiator whic on a Corsa is clamped in by two irritating clamps. Oneon the NS was no problem, but the B@STARD drivers side one - you know, the one you can only get 1/10000000th of a turn each time and needs the strength of a scafolding pole extention, which eventually snapped. yes that one. Anyway, finally got the radiator out.

Next was some conversion. The non aircon Corsa has a slightly different engine bay loom, so I used the donor one, which was easy to change by dismantling the relay box a bit. Now. On with the compressor. Easy fit, but only two bolts supplied. Back to get the other one in the morning. Then Married up the aircon radiator to the existing radiator. Had to use the donor fan as it is MUCH bigger and the plugs matched the donor loom of course.

So, in that all went and back with the slam panel.

Left to do is to fit the heat exchanger unit in the car, which is by all accounts the worst part. Also plumb in the air con piping, which is easy. And finally gas it up and try. Oh, I do have to shift the engine up when I take the engine mounting off to fit the new belt.

Inside the car is mostly stripped down. I still have to remove the cross member for the heater unit and the whole unit with origianl matrix to access the bulkhead and fit the in car radiator/heat exchenger bit thing.

So, time left to finish? About 4 hours I reckon. Nice little Saturday Job. I did most the outside stuff today because the forecast sucks.

There you go. Oh, and now I have just taken the worlds stroingest pain killers beacuse I definitely overdid it today.

Ta da! :y

Well done Fin. I can't even get the rear door card off my Omega, then I go and break something when I try.

Fin I think the doctors gave you the wrong happy pills, either that or the anaesthetic hasnt worn off, you wouldnt knowingly put yourself through the hassle and pain of fitting aircon to a Corsa. Would you??

I assume you will be needing a pump-out soon? use a little PAG oil on all the O rings...new ones please...Did you put any oil in the compressor and drier?

Sounds like they gave you an enthusiastic instead of an anaesthetic Fin. ;)

LOL. Aircon into the corsa is a doddle. What is all the fuss about?

I have used all new seals and the whole system is oiled up. I used semi synthetic. Hope that is ok. ;D
