my LG 50" tv has died 20 days out of guarentee
« on: 22 February 2011, 10:23:53 »

Can anyone on here offer me any advice
i was watching the tv and it went "click, hiss"  then no picture

There is now a crack along the bottom right of the screen on the INSIDE  nothing on the outside protective glass  It has not been hit by anything and is 20 days out of guarentee.

I done a bit of googling and its happened to other people too  anyone know if there is anything i can do or will LG just laugh at me if i phone them ?

No harm in trying it... My old man got panasonic to pay for the parts to repair his TV when it went wrong 2 months out of warranty. :y :y

Also, was that a 12 month warranty? If so, ISTR there is some course for regress through the European Courts :-/ :-/

Worst that can happen is they say no... But I'd be fighting it ;)

One good thing is that all electrical goods by law in Spain have a two year guarantee. That is the good news, the bad news is the receipts are printed on special paper where the ink dissapears after 23 months!

Two years seems to me reasonable and one area where the EU works for the consumer. Of course less opportunity for rip off 2nd year etc paid for warranties

http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1599693 Gives the words I would use politely at the shop.

It is worth asking if it was only 12 months

yes  it was a year
purchased Jan 2010
to say i am dissapointed this has happened is an understatement

Thats actually a point why is it that LG provide a 2 year guarenteeon their products  in mainland Europe  and only one year in the UK?

if they still make it, buy a brand new one and in 3 weeks take the old one back with the new packaging and new receipt and say "this is absolutely disgusting, i want my money back!"

i've never done this though... not with a tv anyway  ;)

Serial number might be an issue, though. ::)

I would try it on with the shop you bought it from. You never know. It's a reasonable expectation for a TV to last longer than a year and 20 days so I would argue that it wasn't of merchantable quality and threaten a small claims court action if they don't budge. If they fob you off onto the manufacturer, do the same to them. Then start making noises about publicising it as a disgrace, etc. You might well find they cave in.

Isn't it typical that all the sh1te that comes out of europe we have to be "brought into line" with, yet the one piece of legislation that would benefit the public doesn't make it over here. >:(

I would say the first port of call would be the retailer from whom you bought the set Doog.

I imagine they will try to knock you back citing the expired warranty - although you never know if you adopt the right approach.

Should you experience trouble with the retailer I would contact LG.

As always, a civil approach and copies of all correspondence, notes of all verbal utterances from anyone you speak to about this is important - should the matter have to be taken further.

right a quick update ...

I phoned LG  They appologised asked me to send them photographs of the broken screen and the front and side of case (to prove no impact damage)  and said they will sort it out free of charge

They told me they have a 3 month "grace" period on out of guarentee items that go faulty

so far so good  I will keep you all up to date.

Expected "lifespan" is an average 100,000 hours

Or, ~11 years if you left it on 24/7..

[edit] Which makes it very hard for me to justify upgrading the 50" LG to the 65" Panasonic when I've only had the former for two years..  ;D

Indeed.. speaking of, doog, which model is your TV?

Y'know, just in case I need to keep an eye on mine in case it goes 'crack, hiss' and stops working!
