Just to add to this, electrical items sold in the UK have a 2 year warrantee by law, regardless of what it says on the box.  That European law extends to the UK as well.  Additionally it is the responsibility of the retailer not the manufacturer to sort it out.  If they hark on about 1 year only, mention trading standards and listen to them change their tune rapidly.

Additionally there is something about the guarrantee on repairs too but I cant recall what that was.

I learnt all this on a recent Radio 4 programme that was very informative on the matter :y

if they still make it, buy a brand new one and in 3 weeks take the old one back with the new packaging and new receipt and say "this is absolutely disgusting, i want my money back!"

i've never done this though... not with a tv anyway  ;)

Serial number might be an issue, though. ::)

Kevin

As well the issue of fraud. :y

in all honesty I did it once with a pair of sony in-ear headphones many many years ago, they'd cost me £18 which is alot for earphones but they were very good until they broke a few days after guarantee

Argos were still selling them so i bought them and took the old ones back a few weeks later and they refunded no questions asked

i do feel slightly bad for it :-[ but some companies have stuff that goes faulty so soon after the guarantee they they'll honour a refund because its morally right anyway

If you ever get static (pun) from a retailer regarding the return of a faulty electrical item, or they try and say you need to contact the manufacturer or 'you need to phone our help line' then just tell them you know your right as stated in 'the sale of goods act 1979 as amended'

This states that the contract is between the purchaser (you) and the retailer (them) not the manufacturer.

Also the 12month or even 2 year guarantee means squat, items are expected to last a 'reasonable time' but each item does have a time scale set out.  TV’s 2 years. Computer 18 months, washing machine/dishwasher 6 years.

Hope this helps

Not quite, see above, as computers are electrical items but are only reasonably expected to last 18 months (12 for a laptop due to harsher life).

Extend the warranty to 5 years if you can once you get it fixed.  Because it almost certainly will break again.

We bought a 50" LG 5 years ago and took out a 5 year warranty/guarantee.  It required fixes 4/5 times in that period of time and paid the value of the warranty MANY times over.  Finally last year it broke beyond repair and we were could choose a TV of similar value, we now have a 60" LG with another 5 year warranty which we've already made use of once!

*goes to touch some wood* So far, 2 and a bit years in and no repairs required to my LG..

(I fully expect it to burst into flames the next time I turn it on, now I've said that!)

extened warrantees are a rip off. well they are if you take one out when you buy anything, look up first how long you can expect your item to last, because if ti breaks in that time you can expect the retailer to replace or repair it. then if you really feel the need, take out a warrantee privately after that, not with the retailer or manufacturer. extened warrantees from the retailer are one of the biggest rip offs, most of the time you dont even need them, you are covered by your statutary rights its just money making.

quick update on my tv issue
LG sent an engineer to my house today and uplifted the tv.
They will attempt to get a replacement panel for the tv or LG will replace it.
Awesome service given its outwith its year guarantee  :y

Our 42" LG Plasma went wrong inside the 5 year warranty a number of times. We got it from John Lewis.

The final fix required a new panel which was more than the cost of a new TV as prices had fallen.

Worked out a compromise with JL which saw them giving us a 46" LED TV with a fresh 5 year warranty. That's what I call a result.

Looks like my Next TV will be purchased through John Lewis and may well be an LG version.

Will be going for an LED/LCD this time, as many of you know I boght a 46" Plasma (Panasonic Vierra) last Jan with a 5 Year warranty on it.  80% use as a PC for OOFing and Gaming and the odd youtube vid
( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkrmVhGq6vg&feature=player_embedded#at=20 ) looks well on full screen mode.

I managed to get a free £200 stand, a free 5 year warrantee and a couple of decent HDMI cables when I bought our KDL46W4500.
