Census: "oddball" question ................
« on: 27 March 2011, 22:36:49 »

As today is census day, it got me thinking.

I know if you are looking for a person for family history etc. you can search for a person, or name etc.

Is it possible to look at actual census data for a particular property from years ago? I'm just thinking it would be interesting to see who previous occupants of the house were, what they did etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The most recent is 1911 I think. There are others from earlier. Follow this link and then click on "Search for a place" on the right, under the form. :y

You need to buy credits for info, though. :(

Can be very interesting to find out about the history of your property and the people that have lived in it in the past.

We lived in a flat in SE London that was once a grand victorian victorian villa. Before it was divided up in to four flats. Traced it back to the 1870's.

I wish we could trace back my Dad's side of the family, but we've hit a brick wall after 1 generation  :-[

Dad never really spoke of his family and previous life (was 40 when he married Mum), and Mum never asked his relatives anything at the time (all long since passed away).

Mum's side we can get back to around the Norman conquest due to somebody very famous in middle ages/early modern times...

What's this particular brick wall TB ?  I have spent 30 years researching my family and have a really annoying brick wall at around 1740. Genealogically it's proven, but not the 110% proof we need for our particular purposes.

Basically, we have a chap born in one town and never died there, and a chap with the same name and parents names married in a town a few miles away with no record of being born there.  We say he's the same person, but there isn't enough info in the records of the time to prove it!

Very frustrating !!!
