Wheel Alignment
« on: 26 May 2007, 22:13:42 »

Hi,

How are you all this evening?

I am going to be replacing my wishbones and trackrod ends next weekend and I was wondering if anybody on here knew of anywhere in the Lancaster/Morecambe area that could do a proper 4 wheel alignment job afterwards?

Even any good places in the general lancashire area would be helpful.  :y

Many Thanks Karl

Our usual advice is to check www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk and see if there is anyone on their list which is reasonably near you... I say 'reasonably near' because it is not easy to find someone who can do a proper job, so even a couple of hours drive to get to such a place would be good investment... as can some people here can testify.

£25 is cheap for an alignment and suggests (even if their machine was working) that it would not be comprehensive. The Meega has many adjustments, both front and rear, and what you need is FULL geometry check. I got through several front tyres before Tony (Wheels In Motion) provided a full geometry adjustment which resulted in even front tyre wear.

This is what I thought at the time, i asked them if it would be a full check 4 wheel alignment as all 4 wheels on the omega are adjustable. They said that it would be!
They then said that in my local area, the ford franchise "Pye Motors" has the most upto date equipment that they know of.

So I will try ring then up sometime after the bank holiday.

Cheers Karl

Tried to get mine done, three weeks ago, ATS, their kit not working, KWIK FIT said they could not do it as their kit cannot go up to 18" wheel, what a load of Bo"*^*ks.
Still trying to find somewhere local, not having much luck, only way now is Vx.

The price seems to cheap to cover the test and camber correction? Here is an explanation of the different types of Alignment
......................................

Various methods are described to encourage you to resolve tyre wear or handling issues, additionally members in forums are keen to advise but often fall victim to the same miss-information, read carefully and stay ahead of 'alignment the big con'

Tracking/Alignment
Is linear, this measurement shows no concern for any other angle. This form of measurement is the most common in the World and the most damaging.
Angles measured 1

Four wheel Alignment
Uses the rear wheels as a scale to centre the steering rack.... then the front toe..... this is better but is assuming the rear is centred.
Angles measured 2

Four wheel Laser Alignment
Same as above.... be wise!

Geometry/Primary
Will image the exact rear centre line to permit a centred steering wheel.. additionally the front and rear camber positions will be measured. This is the most common form of Geometry and i consider this as 'basic'
Angles measured 8

Full Geometry/primary and Secondary
Is absolute but harder to understand. Few places even with the equipment measure the Secondary angles, these include...
Castor
KPI/SJI/SAI
Scrub radius
included angle
TOOT/Ackerman
Delta curve
and so on

Most areas that involve rapid tyre wear or handling issues need to be read from the 'Secondary' data, even more important if the car has been modified or for diagnostics after an accident.
Angles measured 15+

Not easy reading indeed, millions of pounds change hands every day for 'Alignment', a need to be wise could save you £ssss

One more thing to make the 'blood boil'.. The Primary and secondary Geometry has a customer destination?

1: Primary is the 'dumb' customer version
2: Secondary is with held unless requested and named the 'Technicians version.

Hi,

Thanks for all the information, especially wheels-in-motion...I never realised that so much had to be taken into account when looking for a full geometry setup...At least now I know what to ask when I ring up.  :y

Would you be able to recommend any places in the North West that could do a full geometry setup?

Many Thanks Karl

Thanks for the reply. :y

I have found a few places local to me that advertise that they can do a full suspension geometry check... so I am going to give them a ring and see what they say.

If they can do it then I will be able to crack on with the wishbones and trackrods at the weekend.(Weather Permiting of course  :-?)
