Partitions D amd E are basically empty.

Move "My Documents" folder if you can from drive C, never actually done it on Vista, others will confirm if you can,   Couple of reasons I allways do it in XP, 1, it saves space and 2, if the system ever crashed with a serious virus, odds on all your data thats been saved on a different partition may survive, plus if you have to format and reinstall, only drive C need be done to get up and running, hence saving any other data inc video and pics which often peeps dont back up.

Well that lot doesn't add to 160gb, more like 230, are you sure you dont have another HD in there?

You need to free up some C: space first, probably running like a pig with only 850mb free on C. As said before Windows will try and Install stuff on C, and save files on C unless you tell it otherwise.

Looks  like your D drive is your best bet, so decide what needs to moved over D, Files not Programs, and start having a clean up. Personally as a safe bet I would Copy and Paste files over to D, then when your happy the files are the same on both drives delete the the C ones youve copied across to D rather than just Move them, with only 850Mb free on C the last thing you want is for it to start hanging if you was to just move them.

Still think before you do anything, download CCleaner and have a general clean up on C.

I will do as you have suggested,assuming I can understand it correctly,and when I have freed up some space will report back with results.

Sorry I am a bit fick with all these silly questions but computers is really not my thing and am being pressured into using it for a company I do sub work for...so don,t want to loose there work .

Right I have just ran ccleaner and it has removed 466mb..expected it to be a lot more but every little helps I suppose.

Will now see how I get on with the copy/paste stuff.

If you are going to move your 'My Documents' folder (which may well have alot of your personal files in) I wouldn't recommend doing a simply copy and paste, many programs expect the My Documents folder to be in a certain place, if it isn't there it can cause problems.

To move it so that the computer and any programs know where it is, follow this guide:

This ensures that any references to the folder are updated with its new location.  Any other folders you may have created to store personal files are fine to move with copy and paste etc.

Will see if I can move some unwanted and redundant stuff to another drive or delete.

Is it possible to move capacity around then ...shift some from say F drive over to C.

moving capacity isnt possible unless you re-partition and format.. try cleaning and uninstalls first imo..

You can, but it can only be done from an extended partition back to the primary, it can't be done from a logical partition, so it will all depend on how the drive partitioning has been done.  Unfortunately, I would expect any partitions to be logical which would need a format and reinstall to reallocate the space 

@amba: According to the Dell Service Tag that machine should have a 250gb hard drive in it.  If you go into Disk Management as described in the guide below or just click Start then type disk management into the run box it should give you one option which says create and format hard disk partitions.  Click that, a new window will open, give it a moment to gather system information.

When open, it should list all the disk and/or partitions, something a bit like this:

but hopefully less complex haha.  Anything listed next to Disk 0 are partitions of your primary hard disk, I would expect it to only have a disk 0 (if there is only 1 physical hard drive), if it has a disk 1 aswell then you already have 2 hard drives in it.

The bit that is listed as Hard Drive C: and shaded, is your primary boot drive.  You might have a Dell Recovery partition on there aswell.  Anything else that is listed as a 'Logical Drive' is effectively storage area partitioned off from the main drive.  Would be useful to see what you have listed there.

you will rarely see an extended partition with one logical drive or be it unallocated.. also you need some extra tools or techniques to convert which is unavailable in windows :-?
