How to deal with armed pirates - not
« on: 12 April 2011, 10:56:05 »

When a Royal Navy warship captured a crew of Somali pirates, it seemed like a rare chance to strike back at the ruthless sea gangsters.

The 17 outlaws were armed with an arsenal of AK 47s and rocket-propelled grenades, and had forced hostages on a hijacked fishing vessel to work as slaves for three months.

But instead of bringing them to justice, the British servicemen were ordered to provide the pirates halal meals, medical checks, cigarettes – and in one case even a nicotine patch – before releasing them in their own boats.

Makes you proud, doesn't it?  ::) ::) :-[

Agreed  :y

It's about time we stopped being nice to these vermin and used them for a little target pratice  :y :y

Being "nice" to them does not work so lets try and get the message across another way  :y

Why capture them in the first place (assuming there was no 'special ops' reason for doing so) and then release them without sanction?

A bit of a puzzler in my view.

What's the alternative? Bring them back to Blighty for trial, where they'd have been swamped by 'uman rights lawyers, let off on a technicality, paid a load of compo, granted asylum, with a free house and free beer?  >:(

The RN didn't have to be so nice to them though, they could have at least burnt their boats.... Wonder if they disarmed them?  ::)

I should hope so!.. But probably not. It'd have interfered with their rights to terrorise innocent people going about their legitimate business. >:(

This is why I said previously that in all practical circumstances this was a redundant exercise, (assuming there was no ulterior motive for the release).

Either a target such as this is engaged and destroyed or ignored.

There seems the have been little thought given to the machinery necessary to deal (in the legal sense) with people detained under these circumstances.

I like most other people, am outraged at the ongoing Somali pirate situation and it would have been great to mete out some instant justice BUT...

The pirates have the perfect big business model.

At anyone time they have hundreds of hostages and dozens of ships for ransom at many different locations.

They are using modern ships with greater ranges to capture ships.

The Somali country is a lawless one.

What is required is a concerted UN lead International effort to stop them in their tracks and recover all the ships and hostages dead or alive. It won't happen as the world(rightly IMO) views hostage lives above ransom or meting out some instant justice.

Expect piracy to continue and grow in popularity.

Don't know why they don't just blow them out of the water and leave no evidence of their existence. Simple!! ::)

That wouldn't work very well. The pirates mates back home would take it out on the current hundreds hostages and just up their ransom prices.

Like I say it is a superb business model that works very well . As nearly every country is affected it can only be solved by a global response. That isn't going to happen.

Not necessarily. Provided there were no witnesses how would they know? For all their fellow pirates back home know, they've gone missing.
Unfortunately in the real world, the Navy wouldn't be able to do such a thing and keep quiet about it, but if they could............................... ::)
