M1 still shut!
« on: 17 April 2011, 20:24:24 »

That scrapyard fire must've been a biggie given the haz issues that go with it. Hope the fire fighters are ok.

  Also glad my monday job was changed. I was due to load a 20ft box @ Sunbury on Thames. If it's still shut tomorrow the A1, A41 & north circular will be a nightmare not to mention the A14/M11/ Dartford crossing that will be even busier than usual. :'(

The A1 was beginning to fill up nicely late afternoon, but the A1 at Fiveways Corner in Hendon was clear both ways. I drove along it myself on the way to Homebase. I doubt it will be quiet tomorrow, though. The fire itself did not seem that dramatic and there were no injuries, but I reckon the heat must have casued some structural problems as it was going for several hours right under the bridge beneath the M1 by London Gateway Services.   :(

In that kind of area I wouldn't be surprised if the scrap yard predated the M1, too.

Heard on the radio today that the initial fire started at a nearby business as yet undisclosed which spread to said scrapyard. Given most scrappies only have oxy welding/cutting gear, full & il lying about the investigators reckon this would'nt generate 1000+ degrees plus in an outdoor environment...chemical place nearby?

   Apparently such extremes of heat can turn the concrete sections into dust & warp the reinforced steel structure inside them therefore unsafe.

   I bet one or to in. co's. are a tad on edge... gonna be some claim!!! ::)

Oddly enough, I learned this morning that all the picnic tables and scout camp shelters in Moat Mount Open Space (where I walk my dog) were deliberately set on fire during the afternoon on the same day as the M1 fire. The location is just across the A1 - about 10 minutes walk away from the scrap yard. :-? :-?

My friends have a full skip sitting on their driveway. Could be sometime before it's collected as all but one of the company's skip lorries were burnt out in the M1 fire.  :o

The fire was only an excuse for the closure - a series of events like this was the real reason;

Absolutely priceless! :D

I remember reading a report by a radio amateur partaking in SOTA (summits on the air - essentially climbing to the top of hills, setting up a radio station and talking to people) who lugged his radio equipment up one particularly exhausting hill to find someone already there with his ironing board and iron doing "extreme ironing".  ;D

He remarked that, for once, he wasn't the biggest anorak on the summit. ;D

The police have linked these fires with the M1 scrap yard fire and this morning arrested 5 people aged between 14 & 17.  :o :y
