The boom crane was there keeping a 'slack' steel-sling (tether) for insurance purposes......lest the prototype guidance/thrust systems; "let go".

The lift/thrust was provided by eight ducted/vectored-fan, twin-trochoid rotary engines; running on methanol (which were
VERY noisy!)........the 200 X was a proof of technology development: since then, the thrust/guidance/stability technology has been simplified/shrunk and they`ve gone into single duct VTOL-UAV production.
