Then again, if you're ill, the last thing you need is someone selling you snake oil instead of proper medicine, which has certainly been the case in some instances. :-/

The herbal medicines that some people at St Luke's are using have been banned for years, doesn't stop them smoking it or the nursing staff actively encouraging them to smoke as much as possible though.

Not all herbal remedies are snake oil, Kevin. Remember that there are many common medicines that are based on natural ingredients - aspirin for one.
Also, there are many industrial remedies that are known to have rather horrid side-effects.

That said, my problem is haveing a ban. Why is it necessary to ban these things? Do we have an epidemic of people dying from eating dandelions and such? No. I believe people should have a choice.

Essentially, I get the news from blogs. The mainstream media (BBC, ITV, etc) are simply not up to the job these days. Partly that's due to broadcasting time constraints, it is also partly due to the fact that some news stories are deemed too complex for a TV bulletin and, I believe, it is also down to editorial bias.

Blogs have no controls over them. There are institutional blogs, MP's blogs and individual's blogs. At the end of the day, the vast majority of them will link to the orginal source...it may be an obscure EU PDF press release or something, but blogs soon lose their credibility if they cannot back up their statements. It seems to be the case that, increasingly, the manistream media are turning to blogs for hot news stories.

As for 'Snakeoil Remedies', my nervous system has been irreversibly damaged by 'modern', laboratory engineered medicine that has been legally licenced for use on Prescription, each packet complete with a sheet of 'get out of jail free' adverse symptoms encountered by those 'testing' the drugs! We need informed choice, not unilateral bans by faceless bureaucrats

My Mum has owned her Alternative Medicine Book for as long as I can remember. I always thought it was because she was tight not wanting to fork out on perscriptions..... but she hates having tablets as "You never know whats in them!" so I know where your coming from.
My Nanna was really ill and was having tablets to counteract tablets. She was almost like a Zombie when my Mum looked up these tablets that apparently had caused several people simular side effects. Within a few days of not taking them Nanna was back to her oldself thankfully...
I aren't saying we should not take our perscribed tablets by the way  :-?

i could be wrong.. blogs are are an info stream which are not mediated. if the story follows a theme and culminates in a story with history, it is made more creditable if the mainstream decide to backup a story with footage.

Blogs are "weblogs", Daz, nothing special. They are websites run by people that usually allow comments and feedback. Nothing magical, though, they are just websites.

I forgot one of my favourites, EU Referendum or more correctly the blog of Dr Richard North. I don't always agree with him (he can be the Victor Meldrew of the blogosphere), but generally I think along the same lines. Currently, he is running the story about Vicky Haigh, a truly disturbing story of Britain's official child-snatching culture, told in print tomorrow morning by Christopher Booker in the Telegraph. A must read!
