Just read this all on Martin Lewis' website, interesting reading and when you see the videos and how "Strider" himself drives.....he's an accident waiting to happen, yet posts videos blaming everybody else.....

he does seem a plonker, but if everyone used BOTH lanes up to the roadworks and merged LIKE A ZIP you wouldn't have this problem - truckers especially seem to police these situations. So heres the deal people, trust me, if you let everyone use both lanes the queues would be halved...the fact that anyone flying up the outside and nicking in is treated like a murderer actually makes the situation worse as eventually someone needs to stop to let him in causing a ripple like effect of braking vehicles or he loses patience and just barges in, again, causing everyone for miles back to brake.

Every car should use both lanes, maintaining a staggered position with one car in front in the other lane and one behind......"a zip" its a smooth transition as the lane is closed off - its rarely closed off perpendicularly.......which is what you're doing if you pull out to stop someone going past.


The trouble is, it appears very selfish to sweep past, even although if we all did it it would halve the queue lengths and maintain traffic speed, we're cutting off our noses to spite our faces on this one - always puzzles me why no one thinks smart like what I do.

So heres the deal people, trust me, if you let everyone use both lanes the queues would be halved...the fact that anyone flying up the outside and nicking in is treated like a murderer actually makes the situation worse as eventually someone needs to stop to let him in causing a ripple like effect of braking vehicles or he loses patience and just barges in, again, causing everyone for miles back to brake.

Every car should use both lanes, maintaining a staggered position with one car in front in the other lane and one behind......"a zip" its a smooth transition as the lane is closed off - its rarely closed off perpendicularly.......which is what you're doing if you pull out to stop someone going past.

I quite agree, but this guy had opportunity to pull in well before the lane ended, he just chose to pull in at the last moment and on the hash markings...

I don't have those problems either, maybe because I choose to apply the "Anticipation" part of COAST (something which Strider seems to lack in his videos).
Then again it could be because I don't give a monkey's if someone wants to drive like an idiot, I'll simply alter my driving style to accomodate and help them to get as far away from me as possible.

All his videos look like they are on the same route but on different days so are probably on his way to and from work - maybe he should get a job that lets him work from home

On a serious note he reminds me of me when I was early twenty's - convinced that I was a far better driver than I actually was and everyone else was a complete idiot and should be overtaken at any cost..... until I rolled my Senator after running out of talent on a country road while racing a Fiesta 1.3

I'm sure we all thought we were the "bees knees" when we were in our late teens, and I'm sure we all learnt the same hard lesson in the end  (my lesson was stuffing a 5 year old 3 litre Granada Ghia in to a lampost).

My sentiments exactly, Martian. I believe in making good progress, but my ego won't suffer any damage if somebody else wants to drive even quicker than me. Anybody driving aggressively behind me, no matter what they are driving, may come past at the earliest opportunity, and I have been known to make a single-flash left turn signal when the road is safe in front of me to make it easier for anybody driving in my boot. They can crash into someone else further up the road, but not me.

In the clip where the Vectra SRI eventually overtakes on the hatchings and then "slams on the brakes", the preceding two minutes or so of the clip shows our hero immediately adopting the outside lane on two stretches of dual carriageway, thus preventing Vectra guy (in a clearly faster car) from making a legal pass. Why not just delay the overtake and let the guy pass?
Problem solved, driver temperatures not super-heated, no law of unintended consequences as a result of driver anger.
Simple, isn't it?

I agree, to a point, but by merging like a zip you will halve your braking distance, so naturally lift off and recreate that, so the queue of traffic in lane 1 is always going to slow and 'ripple' back.

Seeing people ignore the 'lane closed' overheads on motorways when the traffic has been told to merge for the last half mile - I can understand why the frustration sometimes brings the worst out in people.  ...doesn't excuse crap/dangerous driving though.

Do you really think it's a good idea to give someone like that even more horses?
His standard of driving isn't exactly what I would call dangerous, but he's certainly pushing things to the limit with his late braking and driving up other people's backsides.
The law of averages says that sooner or later he will get his comeuppance, let's just hope he doesn't take anyone else with him when he's on his way to hospital or the morgue.
