24 Hours of agony over ........
« on: 11 May 2011, 17:47:11 »

This time yesterday my Wife had a call from our son. She was driving home from work, he was in an American field hospital in Afghanistan.

"I've just been blown up. They don't really know what my injuries are. I'll call back when I can".

20 hours later & I've just had a call from him saying that he is "ok", but sore, "the Morphine helps". His injuries are 2 broken ribs, fractured pelvis, 2 fractured vertibrae, damaged spleen and kidney. Severe brusing down his RH side.

He took the full impact of an anti-personnel 5lb IED which threw him some distance - all his injuries were caused by the landing. He was a bit miffed that the Americans cut off his combats  - they were new.

Flying home in the next few days then off to visit him in Selly Oak at the weekend.

I hope the next 24 hours isn't as stressful as the last. I hope to get at least some sleep tonight and to cry a lot less tomorrow. The sleep will be aided by some beer methinks.

Many thanks - Rob

What a lucky lad! At least he is ok. If he managed to self-kin inform then that is a very very good sign. You should sleep well in the knowledge that the medical support to troops in Afghanistan truly is the best available in the world right now.  You should have been assigned an officer who will be explaining a lot of things to you.

I know people who work at Selly Oak, it is the dogs in terms of patient care.  The support for families is also excellent.  If you have any questions do not hesitate to get in touch.

In fact, pm on it's way with my mobile number  :y

Yep - welfare has been spot on I have to say. He was pleased to get a ride in a Black Hawk as well. Must have been on the phone to me for half an hour. Feel quite relaxed as well. Might buy everyone at work cakes tomorrow.

Rob, your son is a hero and should be treated as such. He is away, working hard and taking risks for the job he is told to do :y

All the best to him and yourselves... Keep positive :y

You must have been to hell and back over the last 24 hours; a truly terrible experience. However, I am relieved to hear that he will soon be back home with you and your missus. I wish him well for a speedy recovery.  :y
