F1 - Barcelona GP
« on: 23 May 2011, 11:47:08 »

Yet another cracking race. :y New rules, particularly the new tyres, has made a big difference this year. Great to see Lewis pushing Vettel for the last 10 laps and finishing only 0.6 seconds behind. I think a couple of years ago Lewis might have made a rash move to get by and taken them both out but he seems more mature now in taking 2nd rather than no points at all. Some good overtaking all the way through the field (yes Jaime.......OVERTAKING! ::) :P)
It'll be interesting to see if they allow use of DRS at Monaco.

Yup, best Spanish GP in at least a decade, it's usually a bore fest of a track.

Proof once more that the tyres are providing us with the entertainment and allowing overtakes.  Not DRS which didn't work in Spain, I hate it anyway as it gives an unfair advantage to the driver behind and is a large reason why Red Bull are so dominant in qualifying.  Yet the FIA will be imposing DOUBLE DRS zones soon.. >:(

The only good decision the FIA have made is the banning of double diffusers, this has allowed cars to follow much closer than previous years.  They're also looking at banning the use of off throttle engine mapping which has been taken to extremes in the last 12 months, which is a good thing imo.

It's "look but never stare"  :P

Pretty self explanatory, look for the red lights to go out but don't stare so that you're slow off the line.

Stare would make sense as you say.  Except it's definitely steer!   Either way it's a bit cheesy don't you think?

Actually I didn't find this one anywhere near as enthralling as the Turkish GP before it for some reason.. maybe it's because I wasn't paying as much attention to it - I don't remember any overtaking even  :-[

Well Alonso overtook 3 cars to the first corner, Schumi had a similar first lap.  :P

There was plenty more overtakes during the race, most importantly by Vettel behind a train of cars to keep his strategy on track for the win.  Button made a few passes too including an excellent one round the outside of Webber.

Sure there wasn't anything like the amount of overtakes in Turkey, but that was OTT.  Turkey has a great track layout for overtaking unlike Spain, Turkey's track layout in combination with DRS meant who ever was following was guaranteed to overtake pretty much - too easy.  Would have been much better without DRS.

Spain is past years has averaged something stupid like 3 overtakes in a whole race, so it's a vast improvement.

It wasn't as good as the Turkish GP, that would take a lot of doing.  It was just a lot better (for the viewer anyway) than many previous years and many previous races.

I'm not sure I like the way they've done it (DRS and tyres etc.) but it's working for me so far.

Yep, Button cocked his start up with too much wheelspin but done well to recover from 10th to 3rd - a combination of good strategy and good driving. :y

I don't hold a lot of love for Alonso either but he's a damn good gutsy driver sometimes.

I'd imagine he's just coining his own phrase as lead commentator.

Murray Walker was lead commentator for all the previous years and always said "And we're GO GO GO!"

I have the race recorded too, was just easier for me to check online.  :P

Agree that Alonso is a bit of a idiot and a cry-baby, but have renewed respect for his abilities after yesterday - that lunge from 4th to 1st for the first corner was an awesome piece of bravery and driver skill.
