My telly is connected to a freeview hard disc recorder (Humax) and a combined DVD/radio/surround sound via a scart lead in & out of each of them.
My problem is that the DVD part of the surround looks like it's packed in - unable to read the disc - but I'd like to retain the surround sound, so I thought that rather than just buy A N Other DVD player I'd buy a Blueray player. Just having a quick look at what's about I notice that they just seem to have a HDMI socket in them.
So ........ my question is. If I connect a Blueray to my telly via the HDMI, would I get sound from the surround sound box or would I just be able to use the telly's speakers?

All answers in a none tecky language please.  ;)

The B/R player will also have audio outputs Andy - either optical or RCA sockets, cables from these outputs should be able to be connected to the audio inputs on the surround sound system.

Tom shows the various cables available - although I can't hear what he's saying as there's no sound on this machine. ;D

Depends what connections your surround sound has.
Ours connects to the tv with a scart but the tv won't put hdmi sound down to the surround amp so my MCE is plugged into one of the auxilliaries on the tv and routed out to the amp.
I suppose TB would say that's what you get for buying from his favourite electronics manufacturer. ;D ;D

This will give you basic 2 channel sound. If the surround sound setup is capable of 5.1 decoding, etc. it would need a digital feed from either the new blue-ray player or (ideally) the tv via either an SPDIF output or an HDMI connection.

I say ideally from the TV because modern TVs with motion filtering and other digital processing have a significant delay from input to panel and if the sound comes back from the TV it is normally delayed to remain synchronised with the picture.

The TV will need to be configured to "pass through" any surround sound encoding (the other option being to mix it down to 2 channel for a non-surround Hi-Fi).

As Kevin says, if there's also an optical input on the surround sound system you can get the 5.1 sound from the BlueRay if you use the appropriate cable.

We've had it a good few years now

When I wanted to play a DVD last night I borrowed a cheap DVD box from up stairs, Trouble is it only has one scart socket so had to play about at the back of the set.  :(

That OPT in on your surround sound should mean that you'll be able to link it with the BlueRay although I would check that they both have the same type of socket before buying a lead (they're not dear anyway).

Can't find any info on what inputs it has on the back panel. :(

Digital optical input from TV or failing that a pair of RCAs from the TV to an Aux input on the unit would be the easiest option.
