Southern Cross and Old Folk homes
« on: 01 June 2011, 12:12:53 »

I in keeping no doubt with other forum members have a number of relatives in old folk homes. I am not impressed generally with them - certainly not for the money they cost the punters and the taxpayer each week.

This latest scandal - for that is what it is with Southern Cross beggars belief. Despite creaming VAST amounts of money over the years , they are in financial difficulty. Who is behind it all? A HEDGE FUND that has been gambling on rents. These folk have now found new areas to exploit since they ruined us all with their banking schemes.

Where is the FSA in all this? Well they are now going to hold an investigation into why the RBS failed by asking the ex directors some 66 months after the event. That says it all. Still no one has gone to prison for it.

It's par for the course in this country where the lust for money/profit, the quest for self aggrandisement and the desire to opps everyone else over in order to achieve one's own goals - at all costs - reigns supreme.

Rather than scouring the world looking for somewhere to dispense our ‘concern’ and offer ‘solutions’ to whatever problem is topical, we should be ensuring that we can look after our own people first and foremost.

If a nation can’t (or won’t) care for the young, the old, the ill or the vulnerable, there is something seriously wrong.

Not that many of the shits at Westminster gives a opps about it anyway such is the allure of easy money for life, a chance to bask in the sunshine of power and influence and the fatal fascination with international events which have no relevance to the rapidly third world state this country is sinking into.

There is much more to this problem than a greedy hedge fund.
The whole system is wrong and rotten from top to bottom.
These supposedly private businesses running the care homes can only remain solvent by recieving much of their income from local authourities. If the gravy starts to dry up the companies go bust. Doesnt seem right somehow.
This problem has been bubbling for a long time and its going to get much worse. Istr it started in the Thatcher years by the sector becoming privatised.
How did we do things decades ago ? Did the elderly generally live with their families when they could no longer cope ?
I dont really know the answers, but there are more and more elderly people around and some radical thinking needs to be done imo.

the shocking scenes from that care home in Bristol run by a private company with profit seemingly the only motive and not.....err.....care of the patients should strike terror in the heart of anyone who faces or has a family member in private care  :o

see what happens when you pay peanuts and care only for the bottom line?  :(

Years ago old people lived with their family. It is a modern (British) thing to "stick them in homes". Too much trouble. Many European countries continue to look after their old people at home just as they would never go out in the evening for a meal without their children.

Having got to the stage that we are in now, some very serious questions need to be asked why it costs £3500 a week to look after an elderly person. My uncle is in a home in Scarborough. He has his own room, goes up to a communal area for meals. Any illness they call a doctor. Yes there is some specialised personal attention and it is round the clock but a hotel charging that sort of money would be top notch..........

Now they are in trouble they are holding the cap out. Reminds me of the filthy stinking banks. They should be allowed to go bust and the local council take over running each home. They could buy the premises at a knock down auction price like wot happens in the real world.  The ongoing savings would be huge. :y

This is a disgrace. It may be our elderly loved ones that we think are being cared for subjected to such vile treatment. Care home owners are responsible for thier staff's actions. I heard on the radio 4 staff have been arrested. I'm in no doubt the arresting officers will want these specimens brought to tough justice & really hope the CPS don't pee all over this...heads should roll big time & time should be served.

These old folk have raised families through tougher times than many of us will see, fought or lived through wars & to treat them in such an undignified way is unforgivable. If the CPS can't/ won't deal with it then bring the miscreants round here.

I can summon a Kangaroo court at very short notice. Might not be a pretty sight, two close friends & my Gaffer have recently said goodbye to thier elderly Mothers.

That said i hope the law are able to deal with this case properly & really come down on these so & so's with LONG prison terms.

Sorry for the rant but my folks are old...tender subject, Guy.
