tap and die
« on: 16 March 2011, 18:20:12 »

Kevin very kindly lent me his tap and die kit to do a couple of jobs, one of which was to drill out a stud from a seagull block.  The second job is to fit a fuel line adaptor into a fuel cap to convert the fuel system ready for the boat.

I have now discovered that the tap I need is a 1/2 nc18 which is not in the kit.  I have searched the web and the bay of Es but to no avail.

So I turn to the bretheren for assistance, does anyone know where I may be able to get one from?

TIA :y

Sorry, Guffer, just checked my 21-piece metric set and I don't recognise that size.

It apparently contains:
M3 x 0.5, 4 x 0.7, 5 x 0.8, 6 x 1
M7 x 1, 8 x 1.25, 10 x 1.5, 12 x 1.75
1/8 NPT

Double Dutch to me.  ;)

Practically unused set. In fact, I can't even remember why I ever bought it!   :-?::)  ;)

That's an unusual size - even SnapOn don't list a 1/2" NC18 tap, and they seem to have pretty much everything you could think of .. the closest they get is 1/2" NF20.

You're positive it's NC18?

Is it not perhaps a typo.: and is a std. 1/2" UNC 13 thread? :-/

@ Debs : Pass, I know it is 1/2 but when I used the guage in KW's kit it showed 18.  His kit only has NC so I guess that it must be NC18?

Unless UNC13 and NC18 are very very similar?  I defer to other people's expertese on this one :y

as debs chart the 13 and 18 are threads per inch so should be easily identifiable.

My money is on a standard NF20 thread rather than NC18..

Is there 1" of thread, Guffer? If so, stick a rule against it and count the threads ;)

Yeh, check it carefuly, on 1/2 inch UNF is 20 and UNC is 13.

If its into a cast block then it often is UNC if there is any load on it and would most likely be a stud (with UNF at the other end of the stud). low load is sometimes UNF but then it tends to be a bolt.

Just double checked: the 13 and 20 do not fit the guage but the 18 fits perfectly :-?

My money is on a  tapered thread. 1/4 NPTF perhaps? Outer diameter just over 1/2" and 18TPI.

Ah.. brainfart.

It's -5AN, for which the SAE thread size is 1/2-20: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AN_thread

Which explains the 20tpi, but not where you can get a tap to match - but it's a direction, at least. Is there a pirtek near you, or other hydraulic hose supplier? They might well have the required tap since they deal commonly with AN fittings..

[edit] Assuming it's not Kevin or Mark's suggestions :)

I tried a 9/16 nut on it earlier, it was very loose as it tighten but it did bite.  Not sure it would be water-tight though hence why I thought it was 1/2, that and multiple references on the web to this type of adaptor being a 1/2 thread......

.... but if 9/16 nc18 is more likely then I will try and find that :y
