Laptop Advice
« on: 30 May 2011, 13:53:06 »

Hi All

I'm after some advice, I need to re-load Vista onto my laptop but unfortunately don't have any recovery discs, I have got the Licence number so presuming that I can just load it on and away I go... my question is: Is there a legal way of downloading Vista or do I need to buy a disc?

There may be a recovery partition that has the vista install files hidden on your hard drive. I'd be having a search on t'internet to see if there's any info.
On my Acer you have to enable D2D in the bios then reboot and press F11 and it starts the factory recovery process.

I did think of that, however if I remember correctly, when the machine was downgraded from Vista to XP it was wiped by the IT department....unfortunately I no longer work for the same company otherwise I would ask IT to sort it for me... :(

Forget Vista.  It is atrocious.

Windows XP or Windows 7 would be your best bet  :y

Aye sounds like any original recovery partition will be long gone then.
If you end up having to buy the discs I'd seriously think of going for Seven rather than Vista.

It's odds on that the key you have is for what is known as the "OEM" version of Vista, so you would need a copy that was released by the laptop manufacturer.
Trying to use your key on any other version will result in Vista failing the activation process.

I'm also with CaptainZok on the view that Vista is a pile of cack, and if you do have to buy a new OS then I'd say go for Win 7 as well, you can pick up a copy of Win 7 Home Premium for around the £70 mark.

Is there a COA sticker on the bottom of the lappy and more importantly is it still readable?
Wonder if that would be enough to activate a Technet ISO or will it need the OEM cert installing too?

My only concern with Win 7 is that the upgrade advisor actually says that the machine is not compatible, so was wondering if I put Vista back on then tried the upgrade advisor again to see what happens...

Yes there is still the Vista COA and it is very readable as it's under the battery.....

I wouldn't take too much notice of what the upgrade advisor says, it will fail your machine on something as simple as there not being a WHQL signed driver for whatever hardware if it feels like it. Reinstalling Vista and running the upgrade advisor again won't make any odds to what it says.

What is the make & model of your lappy?

Just double checking your model spec, it's a dual core 2.1 with 4gigs RAM?
If that is the case, your laptop will run fine on Win7. I have an old spare Toshiba with 1.6 dual core and 2 gigs RAM and that works and this thing is 4 years old!
