Cordless impact wrench
« on: 05 June 2011, 17:46:07 »

Recommendations please...

But, I have a cordless Hitachi cordless drill, torch, circular saw set with 18v battery's that I like. So sense suggests buying the impact wrench that fits the battery's in that set. Trouble is it's £170 for the body alone.

Can I get another make complete with battery's and charger worth having for that money? Will it last? Sealey seems popular. And the last word will be the snap on one, but it won't get work shop levels of use.

Thoughts please chaps...

Ta.

As per Darth Loo-Knee, the Snap-On cordless impact wrench is the mutts nuts (I have one, so speak from personal experience).

Hmmm, now you mention it, iirc a mate of a mate has a snap on that gets seriously heavy use. He works for a company that services cars for the cateram race series. They went through several other makes before concluding the snap on impact wrench was the only one worth having.

But then again, they where taking wheels off and on every two minutes....

... I won't give it anywhere near that level of use, so will I be paying for durability I simply won't need?

Plus the body on the snap on is quite long iirc....? I need it to fit under sills while car is jacked...?

My impact wrench is no bigger than a standard Bosch 14V cordless drill.

Chris, I have the 1/2" drive Snap On Gun. It is pretty big and will undo crackshaft bolts on Rover 25's, Peugoet 206's with ease.
If you are after something which isn't so expensive the Sealey one I took to Newent last year is pretty good just doesn't have the Ummph the Snap On one, however similar in length but not as heavy.

funny enough i used a sealey one when  in the uk couple weeks ago, changing a 206cc rear beam axle :'( was quite impressed!!!
didnt seem to be lacking in oomph at all but although i used it for all the jobs while there i do wonder about longevity, mate who owns it seems to think it damn good for the price but he played safe and got 2 batterys

TB listens with interest...  ...I was thinking of the £100 Clarke one, but is that too mickey mouse?  I imagine the Snap-off one will put it beyond my price range...

I have the £100 Clarke one and its not too bad obviously nowhere as good as the snap-on ones but for the price its ok.   The batteries are not the longest lasting but you have 2 so just have one on charge all the time ( 1 hour charge).  I've used mine to do simple jobs like changing wheels and removing the migs seats etc  up to a full suspension change on a civic and gearbox, clutch and flywheel change on a Ka.
If your looking at paying snap-on money then I'd recommend looking at the  Ingersoll Rand ones too  http://marmax.co.uk/acatalog/cordless_impact_wrenches.html .  There air impact guns(in my opinion) are much better and more powerful than snap-on and from what I've been told so are there cordless ones

I do not rate the clarke tools I'm afraid. I have now had to return my Clarke grinderette 3 times, torx bits keep breaking, the toolbox I think was a total waste of money..... the only good thing I had from there was my Mig Welder...
For about £100 get a Sealey off Fleaybay :y

Me neither. I suppose they're OK for those that use then every now & then.
