Recommendations please...

But, I have a cordless Hitachi cordless drill, torch, circular saw set with 18v battery's that I like. So sense suggests buying the impact wrench that fits the battery's in that set. Trouble is it's £170 for the body alone.

Can I get another make complete with battery's and charger worth having for that money? Will it last? Sealey seems popular. And the last word will be the snap on one, but it won't get work shop levels of use.

Thoughts please chaps...

Ta.

When I worked for a digger builder, they used to use Makita &  Hitachi 1/2 battery guns, they took some beatings, pretty small too
Something like this

Inreresting, they have some Makita stuff at work, seems to take some abuse.

Hitachi set I have seems good enough. Cordless drill has had a real hammering batteries still strong after firing about a thousand screws into the creaking floor boards upstairs and 40 odd square meters of decking in the garden.

I thought I was seeing things earlier with Hitachi body prices as, this
http://www.power-tools-pro.co.uk/hitachi-wr18dll4-18v-impact-wrench-supplied-body-only-12-sq-drive-p-5716.html?currency=GBP
....was all I could find, but I had seen this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hitachi-WR18DL-18v-Volt-Cordless-1-2-Impact-Wrench-NEW-/200612703120?pt=Drills&hash=item2eb572eb90#ht_2954wt_922
... a while back at a fraction of the price not realizing the location being in USA.

Am I missing something with the spec? Why is the one sent from the uk more than twice the price of the one sent from USA?  :-?
I mean itwill fit uk batteries surely? Guessing it's only the charger that's country specific?

Should add both are body only.

No batteries, or charger.

I have the Clarke and it couldn't get the crankshaft bolt off the Focus.

Not sure it can get much off anything so I don't recommend it.

It will more than likely be what is known as a "Switched Mode" power supply, and they are happy to see anything between 100V - 230V as an input voltage.
If anything, all you'd have to do is change the plug.

TB listens with interest...  ...I was thinking of the £100 Clarke one, but is that too mickey mouse?  I imagine the Snap-off one will put it beyond my price range...

I do not rate the clarke tools I'm afraid. I have now had to return my Clarke grinderette 3 times, torx bits keep breaking, the toolbox I think was a total waste of money..... the only good thing I had from there was my Mig Welder...
For about £100 get a Sealey off Fleaybay :y
I agree that a lot of the Clarke tools aren't that great - my knuckles agree every time one of their sockets splits ;D.  Bad news when you rate Halfords way above Clarke ;D

Never really rated Sealey either, due to a couple of rather naff torque wrenches I've had from them.

Tempted to pay more attention to what I see other people using, and go from there...  ...my birthday isn't for another month ;D

Not all SMPS are happy to take the full voltage range, so check the sticker underneath first, as when you tune those puppies to channel smoke, its new pants time ;D

Apart from silly odds and sods, I only ever buy Clarke Pro, as Clarke's standard stuff is like toffee.

I can't argue with Machine Mart's willingness to post out replacements (without needing to see broken one), but it doesn't cure the pain of knuckles on drive/car/brick ;D

I have more faith in the Halfords ones, so tend to use them more. I have broken a Halfords one - it split on a particularly stubborn Citroen locking wheelnut ::) - but broken a fair few Clarke Pro ones now.

I still maintain, at trade and/or sale price (only a few pence difference), the Halfords 150pc is an ideal 'starter' set for Omega owners looking to do their own work. Yes, I think the older 150pc set is considerably better than the newer one with the red bit case, but still worthwhile.  I understand and accept all its shortcomings, but my 2 sets are still my weapon of choice, as many members will confirm.

That said, my Clarke Pro ones have their niche's - DBW throttle bodies for one (torx socket too wide on Halfords - doable, but easy to round off), and the true Hex sockets for the stubborn ones.

I'm sure if I did as much spannering as you, Mr DTM, I too would buy better tools, be it Teng, Snap-Off etc. But for the hobbyist weekender, I'll stick with the 150pc set.

Mind you, the Halfords 'Professinal/Advance' screwdrivers are shite. I got them dirt cheap, and still think they were poor value.  Mind you, I think the Clarke ones I have are shite as well.  I tend to always use some overly abused Draper Expert VDE for sparkies, due to comfort/grip/power.

Ooh that is poor, a basic requirement surely. Although I want an impact wrench for donut bush bolts mostly, and they can be stubborn coming off so need to be carefully, it will mostly be used for wheels.

I am tempted by the snap on....  It's bloody steep though. Versus £75 for the Hitachi body from the USA to go with the battery's in the set I have.

I rekon £75 on the usa hitachi body is worth a punt...? Don't you? :)

Aren't the batteries dear though Chris?
I paid a small fortune for the batteries for my Hitachi Cordless Drill :(
