Light bulbs again...
« on: 09 July 2011, 10:23:33 »

Interesting articles this week on lightbulbs:

First:

"Mercury vapor released from broken compact fluorescent light bulbs can exceed safe exposure levels"

http://wattsupwiththat.com/2011/07/06/gee-ya-think-proof-of-what-many-have-said-for-years/

But, on Monday, the US House of Representaives will vote on a bill to repeal a 2007 law, possibly paving the way for the lifting of the ban on incandescent bulbs.  :y :y :y

http://dailycaller.com/2011/07/08/house-gop-set-to-repeal-incandescent-bulb-ban/

Can't see the EU doing that on this side of the Pond, though.  :( :( >:(

There have been a few small encouraging signs recently that the tide is starting to turn away from the madness we have had to suffer in recent times. :y

To play devils advocate; is there a smaller or greater amount of mercury in a 'regular' neon tube (the kind we all used to have in our kitchens)?

I suspect there's more mercury in those, given their size, and we never used to think twice about them getting broken..

Incidentally also went looking for bulbs in Wickes the other day to put in the bulkhead lights in the pit - they didn't have 'regular' incandescent bulbs but they did have bulbs with a halogen (just like a spot or car lamp) lamp inside a regular incandescent shaped blub. They use 'slightly' less power than a regular incandescent bulb but seem to put out the same light instantly. Bit like this: http://www.wickes.co.uk/philips-28w-es-a55-halogen-bulb/invt/218893/ (though I fitted 45W versions IIRC)

There is a simple issue at stake here. I'm getting older, My eyesight is not brilliant, , and quite simply, the ' green' lightbulbs are usless for me. I can also bet that many young peoples eyesight will deteriorate more quickly in the 'green' dim lighting.

I currently have an attic full of 'proper' lightbulbs. At some point the government 'may' realise that saving pennies is costing thousands in terms of eyesight care.

What ever happened to the german 'heat bulbs' (dodging the EU rules on the basis that Incandescent lights are very inefficient and give of more heat than light so they were selling 100W light bulbs as heat bulbs - brilliant!).

You can buy 150W equivalent, 30W energy saving bulbs:

http://www.qvsdirect.com/30W-Mini-Spiral-Lamp-BC-pr-22723.html

They are plenty bright but, in my personal woo-woo opinion, just as horrible as the 20W versions.

Don't worry, Jaime, it'll be £200 per month in just five years' time...

...and, yes, I do believe it likely, despite the fact that it's the Mail that is running the story.  >:( >:(
