question guys, girlfriend is about to sell her car..it has a private plate that isnt going with the car, it will be going on her new one. question is...can we hand the car over to the new owner with the original plates attached even though the v5 docs will have the private plate listed on it?
she hasnt swapped the private plate because the car is on ebay, and it may not sell in which case she will be keeping it thats why the private plate hasnt been taken off.

cost ou £80 for a transfer and another £25 for a retention cert if needed.

Agreed, but I thought that retention was £125, but not considering the £80 transfer that you mention, i thought you just took it to retention as you are not transferring the plate at this point...... :-/ :-/ :-/

i wouldnt sell the car with the plate ont it
dvla say the plate never belongs to you, you just pay for the privelage of having it on your car
best thing is go to dvla yourself and get it taken of
they will do that the same day if you want to put it on retention or if you have another car you want to transfer it too
but the new vehicle must be registered to you first

Also it I think it can no longer be done over the counter. You can speed it up by delivering by hand but they always post out the documents nowadays.

If you really want the plate do not sell the car at all before you have changed the plat over or put it on retention.

correct it can no longer be done over the counter you have to take all the docs to your dvla lvo and they take about 7 days,
They give you a receipt for it but you musn't let the number go with the car or its a pig of a job to get it back as the plate will be in the other persons name,
Just tell the buyer it is going through a cherished transfer if they accept that no probs,

it was £80 and £25,
they will do it over the counter if its quiet, and you ask nicely.

They must have broken every rule in the book for you  That said it may be different if going on to retention. My local office (portsmouth) most definatly wont do it over the counter (oh err)

easiest way is to retain before point of sale

TECHNICALLY if you sign the V5 over to the new owner with the private plate still registered on the V5, the new owner has the rights to it

Visit your local DVLA office and transfer the existing(private plate)onto a retention certificate.They will then put the original vechile registration number back onto the car you are going to sell.Will issue with a new tax disc/replacement log book and alter the MOT to show the new registration number and stamp it to confirm.

Go and sell car and don,t spend all the money before you buy another !!!

When you have new car go back to DVLA office and reverse the proceedure putting the private registration number onto the new car.

Thats how I have done it over the years and its by far the simplest.Think the costs was about £80=00 last time although that was 4 -5 years ago.
