If all schools were giving the same decent levels of education within the same set curricullum then there would be no need for the rankings by ofsted, and that is pure common sense.
No doubt that the teachers of today are not a patch on the ones of old IMHO, who brought discipline and respect into the lives of their students. I cannot remember anyone in my class or those below and above who left school unable to do the 3 R's and I certainly know none that had to take basic 3 R's education before their new prospective employer would put them to work. That in itself is a shameful damnation of the standards of todays educationalists. Many do try hard, but are let down by the many more who go for the money and the perks of long holidays and very, very comfortable pensions that the rest of us have to pay for towards.
Bring back the cane, the rapped knuckles, the never ending lines of repetitive text, the teacher called Mr or Miss and the good old fasioned Headmaster that we used to shake in our shoes at the very mention of the threat that we were to go to his office!
Good old days? In my book they were because between the schooling then the armed forces I was taught discipline, respect and that I was part of a team, not just an individual selfish in my own needs and sod anyone else. The latter part of that sentence descibes the majority of today's society, and that is the saddest thing I can say. :-/
