Love the V6 !
« on: 25 July 2011, 13:19:52 »

Everytime I fill the V6 up with fuel, normally every 4/5 days on average, I ask myself "Why on earth did I get a big V6 in today's financial climate"...

THEN I blip the throttle...and I remember why all over again !

 :y ;)

I presume you mean LPG. I've asked this question before but sadly I'm too thick to fully understand the answer. I'll try again. Why does a car do less miles per gallon on LPG rather than petrol?. Anyone?

Fortunately at 45p a mile, business use.... I'm not overly bothered either. The £ 11.25p per gallon on average the company pays me covers all my fuel business and private.

Sure !  I could make a few extra £'s if i drove a 10 year old hatchback of some kind but where's the fun in that ?

Something to do with less calorific value of gas compared to petrol.

In laymans terms, less power in that litre of LPG

Every engine ever built burns a MASS of fuel when mixed with a MASS of air.

LPG weighs less than petrol.. ie .. the same volume has less MASS so you get fewer miles per VOLUME.

If we bought fuel by MASS ... ie kilogrammes... the fuel consumption in "miles per kilo" (or pound if you are pre-metric) would be identical.

We have a MAF (MASS air flow) regulator to measure the MASS of air entering the engine .. it does NOT measure the volume of air. The MASS of a fixed volume changes with temperature and pressure, your engine produces more power on a dry, cold day than it does on a hot, wet one, as dry, cold air is the more dense .. so is a higher MASS, thus more fuel is added to burn that extra air .. so you get more power .... :)

HTH

EDIT .. before any pedants decide to join in .. I base the above on the calorific values of the fuels as being almost equal ... petrol having a range of 44.8-46.9 MJ/kg and LPG having a range of 44.1-46.1 MJ/kg. Those figures will vary depending which web site you look up .....  :)

Stuff all that tekkie bollix, V6's are cool as & pull like the proverbial. Keep up the oil/filter changes & change the cambelt/water pump every 40k or 4 years.

  Then ENJOY!!! 8-)

reeeaaally missed my v6 today, havind to drop a couple cogs joining the motorway at 55mph in the 2.2 just feels like i have to work it soo hard!
really if i could use a 2.6 and do the trips that i mostly use mine for to see what differance in mpg i get id be happy.
i really dont want to get a v6 then find im much worse off fuel wise, but i have this feeling i wont be as im having to push the 2.2 hard.
