Car Tax
« on: 21 July 2011, 17:36:56 »

Hi Guys

This ones for the legal eagles amongst us.  I've had conflicting answer to this question I need your opinions?

If I tax my car online and print off the receipt am I legal to drive the car on the public highway before the disc arrives?

Simple as?

TIA

Taken from the Directgov web site .....http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10021514

If you use the electronic vehicle licensing service or tax by post at the end of the month, there’s now an exemption for not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month to allow time for the new disc to arrive in the post. While you are still waiting for your tax disc you will need to display your current tax disc. The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires.

This is the extract from the 'Common Questions' page.

"Will I get confirmation that I have applied for a tax disc?

If you apply for a tax disc on our website, the Confirmation page can be printed and used as confirmation. Also, if you provide your email address on the website you will receive an email confirmation of the transaction.

If you apply for a tax disc over the phone, the reference number for the transaction will be given to you".

If you have a confirmation email, suggest you print it off and keep it on your persons, then if you do get pulled you can show them that.  As it should have a receipt reference number which the Police can always confirm with DVLA if they want to?

Hope that helps?

Right, definative, unlike most of the 'dangle berries' above...

It is an offence to have the car on a public highway without displaying the tax disc.

The one and only exception is if you purchase a replacement BEFORE your old one expires via internet or phone, you have 5 days grace.

ie, the only time the car can be on the road without a tax disc is if you purchased tax online/phone before 1st (and whilst your old tax was still valid), you can drive from 1st to 5th without displaying it.

Yes Richie. I would much rather stand for an hour behind people collecting their benefit, sending large parcels to Australia, paying their gas bills...oh...and two first class stamps please, while their snotty nosed brats demand sweets from the corner of most post offices that sell a small selection of crap.

Don't want to be sitting at home pressing all those keys. No sir.

Actually you can also drive an untaxed car to and from a VOSA station for a VIC check  ;)

You are lucky you don't have to go to Bletchley Post Office then.  Bletchley is a special kind of place, full of fat old slags, 15yrs old, 4 kids, you get the picture.  I was in the postoffice the other day there, it was queuing out the door, they had one till open. I got served eventually, then she closed her till. Yes, leave NONE open, yet still queuing out the door.  It was not closing time, it was around lunchtime.

Thus, I always get it online, saves digging out the MOT and insurance certs.
