Need a new Modem Router
« on: 29 July 2011, 14:43:13 »

Any suggestions on the above tittle.

Swaying towards Netgear

Not a big wireless fan (Prefer my PC wired) but looking at the options and security then is this worth having.

Or is it just silly money and other cheaper models offer just as good performance for better value.

I'm in the same boat.

Dont want to spend silly money, as fibre arrives here in December  :-X

Trouble is, I need a fairly configurable router that matches the capabilities of my current Siemens ones:

Ability to run without NAT
Ability to run 1:1 NAT
Ability for the router to have multiple RIPE IPs assigned, and NAT individually, both as 1:Many and 1:1 simultaneously
ADSL2+

Can't find one :(

We belieie we have a hacker in the area and there have been some strange going's on, so my main priority is to keep that sod of my PC.

If you mean locally hacking WiFi then you can take many steps to reduce increase the wireless security:

- Produce a very secure Access Code using symbols and numbers
- Use MAC Filtering
- Hide SSID
- Switch off wireless when not using it.

Only the absolute best hackers will be able to get through that and even then it'll take him so long he will have lost interest after a while and gone on to a softer target.

If someone is trying to get into your computer remotely he will be using a Port-Scan attack.  Use of a good firewall will prevent this.

Some recent Malware has been infecting computers through web adverts, purchase an adblocker for a few small notes (theres a good one on CNET)

As for which Router from a security stand point?  They are all as open as each other unless you get a professional one which is not worth it and not that easy to setup.
