I don't need a UI. TV's dont need one (except initial setup).  Something has gone badly wrong if we need prompting how to change channel, or adjust volume  :-/

I'm not sure I follow, whats a UI got to do with prompting to change channel?
A TV has a simple function. It should be a simple device. Thus, beyond initial setup, does anyone care how good/bad/basic/pretty the UI is  :-/

I'd rather development went into core functions (ie, displaying the picture and audio) than glitzy, gay, pointless functions  :-/

hehe, sounds like you need to just keep the Samsung you have then. If it does the job. Unless there is another main reason for changing I can't see why you need too  :y
Only reason to change is because I still have 2 analogue ones in the house, so my existing sammy can replace one of those, and then I can watch live HD in the lounge with a Freeview-HD set. Saves using the MCE to watch HD channels.

Fair enough, have you checked out http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/ They do some really in depth reviews on there.

The TV you are looking at though, is it quite old or really new? Can't find much info online, this forum thread is 4th down the list on google  ;D  with that model number. Whats the budget if you don't mind me asking?

I was looking at around £700 mark, but this one poked up at the cash and carry for under £450 with 5yr warranty.

Like you, can't find anything on it excpet on Samsung's dutch site. Samsung do have truely awful websites though, so thats not surprising.

The implication is it does DVB-T2, assuming my dutch is up to scratch. Can't imagine it will be a worse picture than my 3yr old one?

£700 should be easy to find a nice tv with freeview HD, but £450 is pushing it for a 40 inch.

Just found another site which suggests its not freeview HD, its says DVB-T,DVB-C

Sounds to me like it is either a model that was never sold in the UK or perhaps a "unique" model that was tweaked for a specific retailer to rig their "price guarantee" scheme. (Tweaked UE40D5000 perhaps?)

Can you go to the shop and have a play with it? Or ask to have a shuffle through the manual?

UE40D5000 doesn't have DVB-T2 IIRC.

Had a very quick look online and found this Samsung LE40C580

Seems to tick your boxes and not a bad price. Reviews also very good  :y

I just proved my last comment wrong about £450 being to cheap for a 40 inch with freeview HD! LOL

Its Costco, so at best there will be a remote about somewhere, I think they plug an aerial in back, but no idea where the feed comes from (aerial, or a device that spews out on UHF etc).

I'm struggling to find anything useful on it. That said, it could be new to UK (as you say, tweaked D5000 to support Freeview-HD?).  Costco are more set up as a wholesaler, so less likely to be getting older stock, or non-UK stock.

Yep, not a bad model but it's not LED backlit (not that that makes a huge difference).

Yeah true but for the money it looks pretty good. There is also a 650 too but still don't think its LED. Personally I don't think there is a massive difference between normal and Edge LED. Full LED will be much better but again for £450 doubt you will get Full LED

I think, unless pic quality is really bad, I'd prefer LED backlighting.  The LED ones I've seen have all been excellent, though my main reason is (reduced) heat output.
