It was said (iirc) that there had been 6000 police on Londons streets at the start of the trouble. This was deemed not to be enough and was increased to 16000, by cancelling leave and drafting in officers from other forces.
Cameron stated in the commons today that there are 32000 officers in the Met, which to me begs the question - where are the rest of them ?  :-/

Not all of them are beat/patrol/riot officers, there are other people within the force in other area's such as vice and drugs (as one of my friends is) and such like. There are many other things that need the specialist areas of the Met other than riots so they have to try and spread their resources as best as possible.

Several people I know have had their leave cancelled and are in the process of getting ready.  I remember my riot training, let em have it lads they don't deserve to do this to people's property and livelihoods.
You're too liberal. Use live ammo, and plenty of it.  Yeah, it will cause another riot, but we'll run out of rioters long before we run out of bullets.  And then the world will be a better place.
