I was listening to someone on the radio moaning about the cost of her season ticket from Hove to London costing £4000 a year or something silly. All I could think of was "why live in Hove and work in London?"
I used to be a freelance contractor, so on occasion it worked out that I had a substantial commute. But it was only for the duration of a contract - on average, that was about 6 months. The thought of having to do it daily for years absolutely horrifies me. I wasn't too happy about contracts that were too far to commute, either - that meant staying away from home during the week and a long drive at either end. But all this has to be considered as "lifestyle choices", so I don't have a huge amount of sympathy for the whingers.
On the other hand, the size of the energy price rises is just breathtaking - worldwide, oil prices (and hence electricity prices) have been going down for months, yet our energy companies are imposing 15% increases. I just don't understand.

Used to know a bloke who commuted weekly from Wales to San Francisco - by choice.
Claimed he got more than three times the UK salary over there, and a huge and beautiful house in the Welsh countryside that he couldn't otherwise have afforded. Worked four very long days a week. Flights booked months in advance so cheap, millions of miles on his frequent flyer card so upgraded almost every time and plenty of free flights as well.
He absolutely loved it, and had been doing it for years.
