Sorry, just seen the title.  I assume the *'s are masking some word that you feel is not suitable for OOF. Thus it breaks the rules, thus please refrain.

Symbian was the muts for years, 10 to 15(?) years ago. Before anyone ever heard of smartphones. Which says it all. Nokia, learn to promote your bloody phones other than their physical appearance. Muppets.  >:(

They had the whole smartphone market in their hand!

Orbitel... There's a name from the past. :o Spent some time there in the past - they were based in Basingstoke.

Kevin Wood - Microsoft were Nokia's best chance

Yes, they are in the last chance saloon, after all, but the fact remains that others before them have been asset stripped and dumped on the scrap heap, only to find their technology end up in some tacky Taiwanese Windoze branded phone. ;)

It is quite staggering that Nokia haven't come up with something usable themselves for the man-hours that they have sunk into smartphone development over the years, though. They must have sunk in many times crApple's level of investment.

Nothing I hear about Nokia surprises me.  I first encountered them in 1973 when I joined a very new but very prestigious software house in London. (They're now huge and very well known indeed - but I was number 207 in their personnel list.)  On my first morning, I was given a report to write concerning a new system for a Finnish bank.  I pointed out that I was a mere programmer, and knew very little about how to produce such reports and absolutely nothing about banking systems, and they must be mad to trust me with such a responsible job.  "Oh, no", they said, "don't worry, our name won't be on the report - Nokia asked us to do it on their behalf, so it doesn't need to be very good."

I never quite worked out what was actually going on, but I've avoided Nokia like the plague ever since.  My report really wasn't very good (it could have come from a bumf generator if they'd had them back then), but Nokia paid up and I never heard anything more about it. :)

I have had nothing but Nokias since the 3210 was the highest spec phone you could get. Have had a Nokia N8 since just before they were officially released and i have to say, totally impressed with everything on it except the occasional freezing, swithing off then back on again.
Dropped it off to Voda who sent it back to Nokia 3 times, who flashed it and sent it back yet still the problem persisted. Voda then sent a strong email to nokia demanding they replace it (which they did yesterday with a refurbished model)
Maps on it is as good, if not better than many of the satnavs i have used (i pay an extra £2.50 a month for that) and never sent me down a dead end yet lol. One of the best cameras i have ever seen on a phone yet, all the apps are used (with exception to the tv ones, phone aint for watching telly lol)
Will agree though that the future for Nokia is somewhat muffled at the moment, maybe the move with MS will push them back where they once were.

Thats what I currently have (N8), had an N900 before that.  Camera on the N8 is brilliant, but you would expect it to be for a 12 megapixel :)

I have N8 also, wife and daughter have x6 - no problems with any of the phones at present (one X6 was changed out a while ago by Orange due to power drain).

yes and it is knackered.

Nokia appear to be trying to ruin the OVI stuff in preparation for Windows phones

Ah, megapixels.  The measurement of ones manhood, nought more. Megapixels do not make good cameras.  For example, my million year old canon camera will take a far better pic than any phone, yet lacks all your megapixel dubries.

N900, isn't that what GayBoy had before going down the iPhone route?  Some (typically Nokia) halfbaked Linux with a great feature list, but unusable in practice?

You used go say that of the n95 8gb, you where talking rubbish there. True of the n900 though Useless pile of shite apart from the camera.

The (non UK) N95's problem was ease of use, and half finished features.  Fine for Nokia fans, used to that awful interface, and using it for little more than a phone/text and very simple email device. Oh, and in the case of N95, MP3 player.

UK models were pretty buggy as well, but there were plenty of hacks to put on the more stable euro firmwares.

 ;D

I have some nice lenses for my DSLR, one or two of which might just about do justice to a 12MP sensor. Now, a crappy little plastic lens on the back of a mobile phone... Not likely. ;)

That's the early ones. In true Nokia tradition early firmwares are always shite. Later 8GIGABITE VERSION was far better. You know the score as well as anyone. A Nokia firmware is only ever good enough just before the next model comes out, which returns to shite again! Eejits. Really!
