Mobility Centres
« on: 26 August 2011, 18:00:20 »

My father in law died earlier this year and his Pride Colt 9 scooter needs to be disposed of. I knew he had gone to local Mobility Centre for "peace of mind" but having gone through paperwork he paid £2600 for something that is £900 new on internet. Checking further is the fact that in his area the only 2 dealers are the mobility centre type organisations - I obviously suspect price fixing in that the suppliers are shovelling people to dealers who sell at an artificially high price suposedly offering service and back up - in theory fair enough but not a price hike of £1500. I have referred the issue to CEO of Mobility Centres Forum - but these places operate independently.

Typical that those seeking reassurance in a reputable organisation get tucked up

I too cannot speak lowly enough about these places.

One sold a motorised wheelchair. It had very little use but after the user died it magically had major faults and wasn't worth anything. Yet it had regular servicing and maintenance by them. :( :(

Any companies that claim that they are specialist in helping disabled people get mobile, you will probably find that they charge out of this world prices for their products.

Don't get me started on these so called 'custom made to order' lightweight wheelchairs  >:( .  Normally in the region of £1000 plus.  Hence whey if they end up on auction sites for around £300-400 they're snapped up as that's a bargain.

Take the hand controls I need to use to drive my car (example below), these brand new cost me each time around the £400 mark for a basic set and that's vat free!! :o .  And you will usually find that each set is made to a specific model of car.  The last set I had (and still have in a box ready to go on my Mig at some point, have been made so that the pedals fold up out of my way when I'm driving and fold down for use when abled bodied people need to drive it... these cost me, not a freebie grant, but me £700 (again vat free!).  And that's before I can even drive the bloody car I own  >:( .  And just to give you an idea of the resale value, if I were to buy as set similar to the one's in the picture, say this month, used them for just two months, then sold them, I'd be lucky to get even a third of the cost back selling them 2nd hand  >:( .

Personally, I do have issues with these so called companies that sell products in a 'specialist market'.

As I tell my mates, don't go dicking around in your cars / bikes, as if you go and stuff yourself around a tree or something, as it could end up costing you an arm or a leg not only personally, but financially to  ::)  ;D .
