Police livery / decals for my MV6
« on: 13 June 2007, 11:29:53 »

I recently bought an MV6 ex police Omega estate (3.0 manual!). Its white, and I am considering having some fun entering the Scumball Rally 2008 with it. On that basis I then considered getting some police decals (obviously minus the word 'police') and blue flashy lights so that the car will look authentic.

Does anyone know anything about getting the decals and possibly the lights?

From my limited knowledge you can have the decals as long as the word 'police' isnt used, and you can have blue flashy lights as long as you dont use them on a public road!!!! I may be wrong though!!!!

Any advice appreciated! :y :y 8-)

Whilst driving it on a UK road you cannot have blue lights visible (even if switched off), they must be covered by black cloth. battenburg stripes etc perfectly legal, but you also cannot have any constabulary's crest anywhere, or something that a member of the public would think is a crest. Sirens cannot under any circumstances be fitted, unless you are a film company and the vehicle is used off road on a closed set. driving to that set means covering or removing crests and 'police' wording, plus covering lights and disabling sirens.

How do i know all this? I used to be involved with the film indsutry in the early 80's and got to know a LOT of laws!

So, yes you can batenburg, no you can have word 'police' or anything similar like 'Pollce'

You can fit roof lights if they are amber. No you cant have blocks of wood painted blue either. In a nutshell, the car cannot have the appearance of a real police car for obvious criminal activity reasons.

Excellent mate. Amber lights sound like the way to go then. Better they're amber than covered in cloth. Interesting about the battenberg stripes too and I appreciate the need not to use anything that could imply 'police' in text.

I'll probably have text like 'Rozzer' or something, again, only if its allowed. I must ask the chaps who are policemen on here if 'rozzer' is offensive to police as if so I will stop using that word. I am 99% it isn't though - more of a friendly reference like 'the bill'.

Either way I think the emergency services are all flipping marvellous with the sheer pressure they put up with.

Thanks again bud!

That thread was REALLY useful I will retain that and make sure I follow the advice. The problem is where to get the battenberg stripes but I guess I could get a friend of mine who is a signmaker to put them together from photos of a police car. Thanks v much  :y

This Is only a Joke But would be funny if you had the balls How about PIGS down the side instead of police or HOT FUZZ named after the film

As I said the pigs thing was only a joke one of my good mates is a Motorway cop and no offence ment at all by it.

So how does a vehicle with the full stripes, blue/ white/ red/ clear light bar on the roof and in tiny letters on the rear quater saying private ambulance, like the S Max i saw this morning, get away with it??

Surely if you have someone from the St Johns Ambulance in the car then you can also have blue lights?

Or do they have special dispensation??

Only other point I would add is that the battenburg style painting on the side should not be made from 'retro reflective' material but simple painting is apparently acceptable.  Reason being is that the real deal retro reflective material (normally manfactured by 3M) reflects as a colour when lit by headlights and thus shows other than an amber light to the side, which is naughty....

Its also quite weird when seen under infra-red light.  All thats visible in the pitch dark is the battenburg patches and number plates - no car outline!

Because its a private ambulance.  Not all are operated by the NHS.  :)

Not so sure of the St Johns/St Andrews ambulance member in the car creating an exemption.  Its the vehicle thats fitted with the lights, not the passengers??   :) :-/

Ahhhh. You chaps are all full of knowledge! Yes I will look to get non reflective battenburg stickers made up by my signmaker friend.

Hot Fuzz is fine, but p##s is a bit of a no no I think. I get the impression most police put up with so much crap from people that nothing phases them, but still I would never ever drive a car with that on it, I'd be mortified when these chaps do such a cracking job. I'd watch incase anyone is offended by that one.

Rozzers is cool and retro. I reckon I can come up with something legal and yet still very funny.  8-) :y

Private ambulances come in two distinct types. One is the type which is basically a transit van used by undertakers, the wording private ambulance has a little more subtlty. The other is an emergency ambulance with all the wistles and bells, as described above., but not used by NHS. This could be, for example from Crowell private hospital in kensington. The drivers are fully trained by NHS or private training companies to the same rigourous standard as NHS ambulance drivers.

I was once offered the job of transplant ambulance driver. It meant an extensive blues and twos course to drive a Carlton 3.0 estate car with stripes and twos. I declitned and emigated to South Africa instead.
