Astra MPG drop
« on: 17 August 2009, 22:25:21 »

When I first bought the Astra, it would do 29mpg on gas normally - 32mpg on a careful run.

Under the same conditions, it's now doing 23/26mpg respectively.

I ran it to Milton keynes (300 mile round trip) this weekend, on petrol all the way - and achieved about 43mpg on petrol, driving in the same manner.

Could this be due to the fact the oil control rings are knackered?

It's nearly as cheap to run on petrol, as it stands  :-/

26 hours and no replies - what it is to feel loved  ;D  :P

Interestingly I looked at the plugs. One of the electrodes has nearly worn away in 5k miles.

This engine needs a good overhaul.

i've odered the rings, it's just time  :-/

I think that when the rings are knackered, these things do tend to burn a lot a petrol (not to mention oil  ::) )  :-/ had the problem with one of my Astra's actualy (it was the F-version with C14SE engine [with a few mods - one of which was a TD04 turbo under the bonnet  :D ::) ]).

Why bother running it on gas then?  :-/ 29 does not seem that good really, a V6 could almost get that on gas.

I thought consumption on gas was always less, but its made up for by the price being almost half that of petrol? I am a diesel man myself though so could be completely wrong.  :-/

SWMBO's auto 1.6 Astra only does 27/28 around town and mid /high 30's on a run.

If my 2.5 manual was anything to go by, I agree with Kevin

Don't forget - 29mpg on gas is like getting about 70mpg on petrol, cost wise....
