VW Phaeton
« on: 23 October 2009, 16:45:04 »

Anyone seen one of these? Have been offered one - quick google suggests that it is totally over engineered and was targeted at Audi/BMW/Mercedes category and is slated for not  having right badge. Having said that it is a hell of a car and if you can stand to lose the depreciation (or in my case keep it for years like the Omega) then it may be worth a gamble if the price you can get it at takes care of a chunk of the poor residual issue .

Not many around as ex VW President got market completely wrong on demand. £44k to £75k new for a VW!!

Built in a glass factory by technicians in white gloves  - seriously, take a look @ the VW web site.

A set of 4 shocks is £4k though.

Has been out a few years and you can get an early one from about £12k

Yes - that thing does 14 to a gallon or something - I am thinking of the 3.0L diesel 4motion.

3 litre diesel version is ok for consumption.

but as stated parts prices will be a headache..

and seriously whatever they do vw is the not in the same league with mercedes and bmw.. :-/

How much  :o

I have seen these too, very cheap now £10-15k for nice examples, but if thats the price of parts i can see why!

Shame, good replacement for the Omega  :'(

Mercs were pretty bad actually.
And Phaeton is just a modified A8 mostly.
If you disregard the Lexus, A8 is probably the best of the big german three.
Phaeton biggest problem was a lousy badge, and of course the actuall name of the marque Wolkswagen = peoples car. Well not judging by new Phaetons prices

My gamble is a 1 month old one with £5k of extras for £30k. Gives me 3 years no bills and then option for extended warranty. This might leave me in 3 years time with a car worth £15k as Tunnie says.

Omega was£32k with all bits in 2001 and I bought it in 2002 for £17k. Probably worth £3k now

I remember seeing Jeremy Clarkson test the new Bentley saloon and afterwards say that anyone with any sense would buy the Phaeton which is a Bentley with different body and save a fortune.

interesting thread, i seriously fancy one when Omegas are dead and buried, and would be tempted if i where you although i would be looking for an older/cheaper one tbh giving less depreciation.

Would be worth a look at vw servicing prices which you will have to pay to keep that warranty valid, and parts prices, give the dealers, factors and breakers a ring with some common parts and see what they say. German and swedish near you? Much cheaper than dealers for parts.....and the vag forum is not a patch on this one, but then you knew all that. :-)
