Galant, fwd.  swmbo had described a noise like brake pads worn, though recent MOT. Our local independant was too busy during the school holiday, so put the car off the road and she is driving the Mig....

Took the car out for a drive today, no noises but noticed the chat chat of the abs coming in, twice when harsh stop from 30, quite a lot when hard stopping from 70. Car coming to a controlled stop in, what I feel, a good distance.  I admit the roads were slightly greasy and the car has some cheapo front tyres but never known this before......Any thoughts? have I even got a problem :-/

I think the Rover may have same issue, though its rare and intermittent. Sure I've had ABS intrude at slow speed under gently coming to a stop.  Can't seem to replicate it, and now I'm doubting if it was ABS, or just some odd brake shudder  :-/

Cheap tyres, greasy cold roads, violent stops...ABS will cut in and you will hear the chatter and feel the brake pedal pulse while doing so; simply because you are asking more of the tyres than they can give, they are letting go, ABS notices and kicks in.  Early systems are prone to being over-sensitive and kicking in too early.

If no ABS warning lights, would suggest checking tyre pressures not too high first, then tyre tread/quality after.

Sounds normal this time of year with hard braking on nasty tyres....

If the ABS light is not illuminated, then you have NOT activated the ABS.

As TB/Vamps say, I'd be looking at tyres, brakes, suspension, etc if the above applies.

I once replaced one tyre with a non matching tyre in the set of 4 and this caused mayhem with TC and ABS as grip levels were different so sensors kept activating the systems.

Are you saying the MIG doesn't alert the driver if/when the ABS takes over?
If so, I'm going to double check that this week by taking my mates MIG out and intentionally bringing about a situation that would cause lock up on a car not fitted with ABS.

Not had the Omega long-but he's on about a Galant front wheel drive.

In 87 cars, never had one where ABS light notifies you when it kicks in, but all traction control equipped cars have flashed the TC/MSR whatever daft acronym warning light when activated, same with ESP sytems.

Some ABS cars have driven me nuts with over-sensitive ABS-the Berlingo was one-it kicked in way too easily if only one wheel lost grip and worked on all four wheels, sending you careering onwards if only one wheel lost grip.  Crazy!

I noticed it most on a Suzuki Swift 4Grip which is was due to trade in, so replaced a punctured tyre with a cheapo tyre and left the other 3 decent quality tyres on.  Every time you braked, the cheapo would lose grip and cut in the ABS as the sensors noted a difference in wheel speeds.

Fairly new to Omega, so not an expert except for the useful info learnt off here-so may be different on Omegas-but never known an ABS car to light the symbol when activated.
It is normal for TCS and ESP to light when activated however.

I think the issue with the Galant is the tyres-wrong pressure, cheap quality, part worn, cold weather, hard braking.  Add poor tracking, poor road surface, dodgy brakes, worn suspension into the mix it just gets worse.

If it was mine, I would start with the tyre pressures, then check the tyres over first, modify driving style, then look for a more complex ABS answer after

My MKI Carlton, B series Senators x 2 & and my Omega have never put the light on when the ABS kicks

Had a few Fiats, Citroen, Fords, Fiats-none of mine did it and I used to drive like FURY!

I've never had an ABS car flash at me under furious braking when i know its kicked in by pedal pulses-maybe there are some out there and by chance mine did not??

LOL-perhaps they just light up randomly-especially the Fiat
