Someone asked about top speed in reverse...
« on: 24 December 2009, 10:14:23 »

A while back someone asked how fast an Omega would go in Reverse.

While trying to park my car at work I got stuck in the snow. I was trying to move without spinning the wheels but it was having none of it. Engine rpm at 1000rpm = Car doesn't quite move, 1001rpm and its spinning wheels and still not moving! You get the idea!

Anyway, I remembered about someone asking about top speed in reverse, so decided to 'investigate' for a couple of seconds…

I saw the speed hit about 80-85mph  :o And revs will have been around 6.5k, so there’s a little bit more to go too!  ;D

PS: 5-6 mins after the few second 'investigation', with the help of my boss pushing the car, I managed to get my car parked something like!  :( :-X

Thinking it out in my head, I wondered if the speedo actually showed a speed in reverse, never actualy watched as I prefer to see where I am going, especially if I were to reach that speed in revrse.

What speeds did you attain through the forward gears.

I once tried it with my Atra GTE in the snow, managed to keep the wheels spinning through the gears all the way to an indicated 132mph

Seen 140mph spinning the wheels in the wet (but remaining stationary) in a car park on the 3.0 Elite but backed off when I saw some headlights approach.  Reckon itmay have gone to over 150mph.

Guessing that you only had one wheel spinning, as that sounds like double what it really is. Apparently ::)

I had 60mph earlier going forward whilst not moving. Boys will be boys ::)

I've also had the foot hard to floor, with the TC banging the revs between 6000 and 4500 rpm constantly in 2nd gear a few weeks ago before the car eventually got full traction (that was a few weeks ago, when we got the first lot of rain).  How said the TC on Omegas was rubbish. Boys will be boys ::)

My GTE (8v) would never hit 130 - rev limiter cut in in top at 129mph. Apparently. Down the M45 and M1. Apparently.  Until Plod followed me. Apparently.

Obviously, this is heresay, as I would never try such a thing

So ....... which ABS sensor does the speedo take its input from? Assuming it's one of the rear sensors, you'd need both wheels spinning to give a proper/true road speed, otherwise it'd only be showing half road speed via the open diff .......  :-/ :-/

I read somewhere that CVT-geared cars can reach top speed in either reverse or forward...  :o

That reminds me of a the electric forklift I drove as a young man... only 2 gears, forward and reverse, and rear wheel steering.... very easy to topple over  ;)
