Every time I use High Octane Fuel, I feel I get lower MPG (as opposed to standard, cheap 95 ron).

Anyone had any similar or different experiences?

My view is that premuim fuels in Omega are pointless - apart from maybe the odd tankful for the cleaning properties...

Certainly don't get increased MPG or performance...

I tried it for a while,didnt notice any difference in MPG or performance.Some people swear by it though. :-/

i think the same iv put two tank fulls of the shell stuff and only get 16/17 to the gallon but if i use the 95 ron stuff i get 20/21 to the gallon think the omegas like the cheaper stuff i think :-) :-)

Yes with Shell V-power and BP Ultimate i got 2-3 mpg less than with standard Tesco or Asda fuel ....  :-/

Mine certainly runs nicer / smoother on it,
I seem to get a little more power or economy (not both  )

Dont put it in often, just every now and again, if I know I want to be extra playful

I regularly use BP Ultimate (or if no BP garage around then whatever high-octane fuel is available e.g. Shell V-Power or Texaco High-Octane etc, but never 95). 

I don't think it will make the car fly or reduce the mpg, but I do believe that the added detergents will keep the intake clean - I even stopped adding Redex since I started using these fuels.

But because I use it regularly I have nothing to compare it with - so sorry, but I can't really say if it improves the mpg....

i notice a difference, little more power above 5k rpm, idle is smoother. But because its nice and smooth and little more power, mpg goes down cause i boot it everywhere.

Driven normally i would expect better....

I usually use it when doing long euro road trips when 4 up, i need all the extra power i can get

Silly question - but do you have an Omega? Its just that your signature implies not & in which case what car is the rocket fuel going into?

Good question...

1998-2001 Omega 2.5, standard fuel, with Redex added to each tankful.

2001-2008 Omega 2.6, only high-octane fuel, no Redex, when removing the intake manifold at 40 k, the injectors were shining and squeaky clean like new!

2008- Merc C180, only high-octane fuel, no Redex. Did not take anything apart yet...

i think its more like the placibo affect 
you want more so you tend to put your foot down abit more 
the way i see it is that as long as the petrol is of reasonable quality then it shouldn't make any differance.
i was always under the impresion that any reasonably modern engine with a knock sensor would adjust the mixture too compensate anyway  :-/

I never use it, never noticed a difference, well tell a lie apart from me having to pay more for less fuel

I hope there is some weight to your theory, as I brimmed the tank with Super Unleaded from Esso (from empty tank) and now I'm averaging 11mpg (if the computer is right).

I do have a heavy foot though.

Bear in mind that high octane fuel contains a higher volume of additives to control knock and often a higher proportion of Ethanol. Both of these have a lower calorific value than 95 RON petrol so I wouldn't find it surprising if fuel economy was worse on an Omega.

Put it into a car that would otherwise go into knock retard or reduce boost pressure (if a turbo) and you'll probably get better MPG because it allows the engine to operate as designed.

It's horses for courses. No point in using high octane fuel if the engine doesn't need it.

You seem very knowledgeable about fuel.

I tend to fill with a supposedly superior fuel every 5 or 6 re-fuels.  Is this a waste of time, or can it assist in the general condition of the engine?
