toyota avensis odd brake problem
« on: 14 November 2009, 12:53:36 »

I'm not sure if I've raised this problem before or not.  Anyway, here goes.

THe problem relates to a toyota avensis 1.8 auto.  After braking at very slow speeds, there is intermittently the sound of a large spring being released. This is coupled with 'feeling' it through the brake pedal.  There is nothing obvious here like a trapped brake pedal return spring: and it is too solid a spring noise for that.  I'm at a loss!   any ideas very welcome

If you have not already done it, I would take your wheels off and thoroughly inspect your brake mechanisms. ;) ;)

Yep done that!  Noise seems to be emerging from engine bay, bulkhead area as well so I'm sort of discounting a problem at the roadwheels

the only other thing I can think of if the noise is coming from there is that there is a problem with the master cylinder.

I'd say the same. Maybe some seals trying to pop out? Get it checked out properly, before anything catastrophic happens...

i would be looking at road springs on the front sounds like the tail piece has broken off and the spring is moving under light load!! common on them avensis!!!

Sounds to me like a problem with the brake servo, internals.

I'm now suspecting this is suspension related....  only seems to happen under braking whilst turning the steering wheel.    Need to get under it and poke around but i'm wondering if it is rack/suspension related - any further thoughts?

well the saga continues on this little gem.

disconnect the ABS sensors on the front (disabling the ABS system) and the problem stops.  The only thing I can think of is that the ABS is triggering very slightly braking and turning the steering.

not sure what the solution here is (apart from a late model 3.2 auto elite which would be infinitely better in every way...)

Check the ABS reluctance rings on the CV joints for damage/cracks

will do in a few weeks as the car is not with me at the moment.  Can I ask what the thinking is here?  is it that if the rings are damaged/cracked the ABS may be getting a slightly incorrect signal?
