ICV - now cleaned but how does it work

Hi,

After advise from the forum I cleaned the ICV. It looks like it simply alters the amount of air going into the engine. I'm the sort of person who likes to understand how things work, so can someone explain to me what the ICV does and how it works and when the valve is open/closed(my cark knowledge is small, but growing)?

It all looks a bit different on the 3.0. But am I right in thinking that when at idle the only air coming into the engine if via the ICV? And that the ECU alters the position of this and the amount of fuel to control the idle speed of the engine?

Also I've only cleaned the ICV, on the 3.0 should I clean the breathers as well - although not done long ago, so I probably don't need to this time.

You're about right there really, the idle speed valve allows a greater or lesser amount of air in based on feedback from the ECU.  This keeps the idle speed steady in varying conditions.  You'll notice that the valve is never fully closed at it's default point too.  If yours is properly 'shut' when inactive, there's something wrong with it.

Sounds like I may have a problem then. I'm sure when I took it off it was fully closed. I'll have to take it off again and double check. How much should it be open by?
