Spray painting bumper and front wing
« on: 09 February 2010, 15:38:25 »

I need to spray paint a front bumper and front wing in krypton green metallic (z380) - should I just buy aerosol spray paint or is it more economical to hire a compressor and spray gun - or would I be better using one of these : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ELECTRIC-AIRLESS-PAINT-SPRAYER-SPRAY-GUN-120W_W0QQitemZ360207509187QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_DIY_Material_Paint_Varnish_MJ?hash=item53de0a66c3

Where is the best place to get the paint - dealers  or Halfords?

Any advice would be welcome to a car sprayer novice :y

Personally, I would use an honest smart repairer who can mix  (and tint due to age and fade) the paint himself.

I had a bumper and wing prepped and painted on my last Daihatsu in Hereford for £150 all in and it was perfectly done.

I have painted a good few cars myself, but getting a metallic to properly match an older factory job yourself with limited kit and knowledge is pointless-best to miss out the hassle and do as above in my opinion  :y

Its a lot of work spraying car panels. Modern paint is 2 pack which means it gives off isocynates so if using regular paint from a factors, you need an air mask or a good filter mask, etc. Plus you need several guns else keep cleaning them between coats. Plus you need to keep the temp up about 20deg I think else it won't set properly, plus keeping down dust etc.

As CTP said finding a good sprayer is often well worth it. A local one to me charged £60 per panel.

trust me, get a pro, i have all the gear here for spraying and a booth, but always pay a pro to come and do the work, guaranteed a good finish then. costs about £100 in materials for 2 bumpers and a couple pannels. £300 + in materials for a whole car with minor repairs.
plus all the labour charges. and time masking and stripping, its easier to pay a pro.

Not blowing me own trumpet or anything, but i can get just as a finisk with aerosol than i can with a compressor,as the rattle cans today do spray in a fan pattern the same as a compressor, plus i have a mate who has his own place doing paintwork, and has learnt me a fair bit. :y

I spray cars for a living, you'd be very lucky to get your paint to match from a can, you really need to get the paint mixed by a pro, i mix my own and always get 100% perfect match

If you're a novice forget one of these (unless you are painting your wooden fencing).  These will pulse and you will get a real krappy finish.

As said above, unless you have experience get a pro sprayer to paint it  ;)
