Well the other evening I read the fault codes on Di's car - none stored.

Di has since been to France and back in the car - and noticed the EML came on half way through.

I have read the codes again - and present are:

P0300 Random/multiple cylinder misfire detected

P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

P1523 Electronic Throttle Control Malfunction

So - all fresh codes.

When revving the car, it didn't seem nearly as responsive as it did on Monday night..

Interestingly, it has been reported in various places on here that Cyl no 4 has been problematic before.

Also - on  revving the car, there is a god-awful new knocking noise as the revs drop.

I thought at first it was a follower, but - too noisy, loud and metallic.

My only other thought is cambelt idler - which I'll check by taking the cover off tomorrow.

Unfortunately I'll only be able to  do half a job, as the stat kit / pipe hasn't arrived yet.

Thoughts welcome, specially on the codes and the knock - as I've not owned a 3.2 before.

I will respect the confidentiality of the person who sent it - however, I have now been sent  some background info regarding this car, and things done to it before it was sold to Di

Hiya James,

The P0300 and 0304 were what I was getting on mine before I replaced the coil pack - it was due to the water ingress (which you saw dry evidence of at the last service) - that came back with a vengeance! On removal of the coils, cyl 4 well was the wettest by far. Water leaking through the wiper hole in the scuttle, over the wiper mechanism, and down the plenum, into the wells. Finally killed the coil pack, and eventually caused the emissions light to flash as the cat was getting unhappy, so changed pdq. I know there is ETC stuff in that area too, so perhaps that's got a bit wet too?? (the water was considerable in mine, especially during the wet months before Christmas!)

take it the stat was never replaced? that could have buggered the cats...

0420 and 0430 are the old favourites...

I ahev seen the multiple missfires and throttle fault codes with a failing MAF.

But first things first, change the cambelt etc.

Running a tad cool won't hurt the cats, as long as the ignition system is OK and igniting all the fuel...

You sure the knocking noise was not it coughing back into the intake manifold and smacking the throttle shut? Have seen this with a failed MAF before when running lean.

0420 and 0430 are naughty. Presume emissions bulb removed? advert did specifically state no pre-cat issues with this car. :-/

Then again, the codes can sometimes be there without lighting the emissions light IME.

Give it a good service and see what's what afterwards, I reckon.

Got this on my car before I changed the MAF, but on acceleration - sounded like something major was knocking

0420/0430 may be just due to differences in French fuel ... worth just removing and seeing if they recur IMHO
