Do I want to buy an Omega limousine?
« on: 23 February 2010, 23:08:03 »

There's currently a 6 door facelift limousine on ebay, that got me thinking...so I contacted a few people, and can get one for a relatively good price.
It'd the 6 door by Wilcox with the 3.0 or 3.2 engine, CD spec but with xenon's, or an Elite version minus boot spoiler.
Question is, should I?
I've always strangely liked them, but it's not going to be overly practical...you'd have to take up 4 parking spaces as you'd have to park sideways ;D
It of course isn't going to be my car I use all the time, but something different...is it too different and mad?
Normally, I make my mind up in 30 seconds whether to buy a vehicle or not, but am stumped on this one  :-/

Sounds to me that by asking the question, you've already thought of a use for it.

'Ave it! :y

Thats a lot of money for a 12 year old car ... and it looks preface-lift .. although it might be mini-facelift ...

Methinks the one you have thoughts on should be a lot cheaper before you get serious ...

;D I'm a motor trader, so all vehicles I own are to be sold on, so I do have room for it...I'm 20...so no big family  :D and not hiring it out etc. Just fancied something different, but I'm desperately hoping someone thinks of a fatal floor to my plan to disuade me, otherwise I'll buy one. Had an Elite, and two ex police and MV6 etc...so wanted something a bit different.

You're quite right Entwood, that is indeed a prefacelift one, but there is a facelift one on there...somewhere.

I must confess... It's something I've considered semi-seriously a few times... It would have to be a second car and wouldn't really see that much use... The odd trip to Londinium (Register on TFL as a minibus and it's CC exempt ::)) and the occasional weekend trip out with lots of people :y :y

I used to service funeral cars at the garage I worked in... An Omega Hearse and 2 Stretched Granada Limos... They were lots of fun in the wet :-X :-X ::) ::)

Fatal flaw highlighted ;) ;) ;)

It's very much a niche market

IMHO the "fatal flaws" to the idea are :

Running costs ... the extra weight, the need to slow down much more for corners then accelerate again and the slower speed through towns and traffic would make the fuel consumption worse than normal. I would imagine tyre wear would be increased as well over the longer term

Convenience ... finding somewhere to park it everytime you go out

Idiots .... anything "different" is a target for the plebs that like to wreck things ....  it's always going to be a target.

License .. there was talk a few years back of making all the stretched limos .. hummers etc .. have a PCV rating .. not sure what happened about it.

Paul/Entwood- You've both made excellent points!
I thought 'mmm that'd be fun' and chucked the where do I park it when I go out, fuel consumption arguements etc out of the window...a dangerous thing to do.
The facelift limousine, would have cost me £11,000 but that is a cheap price compared to limousine retailers selling late(r) facelift limousines. I shall ponder it some more. Thanks for your imput.

This link shows a Wilcox 'Eagle Statesman' Omega limousine facelift used by the Mayor of York, and is still used, mine would be similiar to this...

Josh, why don't you phone around a few funeral directors, and see if any of them are looking to increase the size of their fleet, in other words, put the feelers out and see if you can place it first,

Good Luck.

depends if you can get work for it, maybe look at renting it out to other companies? With summer coming could be useful for funeral directors, or even weddings  :-/
