I had to jack up Miggy to fix the exhaust last weekend, what a palaver, trying to find a space to fit the jack and then room for the stand.

i got a big 3 ton low profile jack which is so much better than the tiny little one it replaced:



Only takes a few pumps to get level with the chassis, its also got a large flat pad, so its easy to lift the car up.

Plenty of room to put an axel stand on the chassis rail, i do stuggle using it on the back though, usually bring the little one out for that.

I keep a bottle jack in with the spare wheel, instead of the stupid, now broken, half scissor...

Years ago I worked under cars & vans from a proper designed pit,I helped my father dig one out in our garage, and I think it can't be beaten unless perhaps by the  post lifts. Whatever else you use there are safety and obstruction problems.I'm hopeing to get one sorted shouldn't cost such a lot moneywise. Its going to be the digging, but there's some planthire stuff might help. Trouble is haveing it in the garage is a non starter,im thinking the car port could be OK and use some nice timber beams to top it with,next problem is how to persuade the other 3/4 to go along :-/ At present I use a pair of 2 ton jacks to lift the complete rear end, or front end, (I got these from machine mart a few years ago) with a pair of axle stands parked under as back up. As Ken says its not easy to find good support points on the car.

Oh dear watch out for the water table. Many moons ago, I had the oportunity to build a cracking garage, 25*14ft,and I got a pit built in. It was composed of 2 rows of engineering bricks so was good and strong. Except the builder didn't bother too much with the damp course of plastic sheet, and it kept filling up with water. In the end I had to dig a hole in the concrete base to put a pump to empty it.   


Trouble is when you have built a complete garage its a bit too late to start worrying about the foundations.

The water table is a few feet below the ground surface, and if you go below this water will be there, trying to get into your structure.

I bought one of these 4x4 jacks (2.25 ton rated) a couple of weeks ago. I used it to do my Donut bushes recently and it gets the car nice and high. Pretty good value IMO (reduced from £74.99 to £34.99 at the mo). Recommended

Hello Ken,The water table is about 2Ft lower than the concrete base of the car port. I thought that instead of being brick lined. Concrete shuttering might be Ok with a heavy guage plastic damp course. Very much like garden pond technology. However the other 3/4 has pointed out that its a lot of work for the use it would get as I'm of senior years,and the rest of my family use garages anyway.The system I use employs a pair of ramps longer and higher than the average, bolted to the concrete base  and a jack under each of the two remaining corners as already mentioned to level up.Of course with a pair of stands to back up the jacks.I've realised that if solid supports could be devised to anchor within the jacks, so if the hydrolics did fail,all would be Ok.So the stand back up could be done away with.I've looked carefully at the mini lift, and I think it could have made things difficult on the last job I did on Miggy, namely change the autobox fluid. Depending on how the lift struts located with relation to the autobox,just a thought to consider

Mine is similar to that one but a 3 tonner, bought from Costco for about £85

Low entry height and lifts to 450MM and only a few pumps to get it to the max.

not bad but how do you want to get your exhaust off if you use that jack? it might be a slight problem with space me thinks.  I would have to see it with a car on it before I would get one.
